Dabo Swinney is the flip phone of college football.

Yea he has to get in the portl to compete, I agree, but I kind of admire him going against the grain of commercialism to try and do it the old fashioned way. loyalty, develop, players and love of the game.

He has no niche, though. He won because he had better players and damn good coordinators. Remember those natty games vs Bama? That talent was elite.

I initially thought that it was too late, but DP has a point about Duke. Coach K got it back, but I don’t know that Dabo is as good of a coach as K.

I'm going to follow Dabo's advice and up my appreciation and lower my expectations. He's worth every bit of that $100M guaranteed salary.
At least Kirby owns the fact that he’s FOS. He bragged about taking no portal players in 2021, when it was convenient. Jumped on train pretty fast though, even though on the surface it doesn’t look like it benefitted him (titles in 21 and 22, started mining the portal after that).

Funny I guess the love of the game wasn’t his biggest concern when he negotiated for his 10 million dollar salary. I’m sure Jimmy Sexton is his agent because Dabo respects how Sexton cares about the integrity of college football.

Doesn’t change the fact he’s trying to develop players and build a team of veteran players who have played together. hiring mercenaries doesn’t seem quite the same.

He won titles because of Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence. That’s pretty much all there is to it. Look at his record in years without those guys as QB1. Take those guys out of the equation….he’s just another high floor / low ceiling guy like Tommy Bowden.

Even Leach, who was as old school as they come, embraced the portal. He supplemented immediately (guy from Cal, others, Jackie Matthews, safety from Texas). Dabo was being intentionally hard-headed. Or maybe he was just too cocky.

Heck even his first year Leach had Costello Shavers and others, who would have been great in a normal year.

And the defensive line. To deny that talent is being stupid.

He has been pretty boisterous about his disdain for NIL and the portal which is why I think his salary and agent make him a hypocrite. His reluctance of the portal wasn’t some calculated coaching decision, it was because he didn’t want to give into these greedy kids.

I think it may be in the middle. I think his ego is just that big - he thinks he’s so good as a coach that he can overcome NIL/portal.

But hey, if the guy has saved his money, he’s set for life many times over. Some folks get lucky.

Dabo is a hypocritical fraud. I can’t wait to watch his self-righteousness and stubbornness get him fired
As I've stated on here, my wife is from Clemson. We've been around Dabo a time or two. This is ignorant speak. You obviously do not know Dabo.

He doesn't have an issue with players getting "their just due". The current system isn’t sustainable and fans shouldn't be footing the bill. Most everyone on here agrees with him.

I do agree he's fighting a lost cause if he wants to compete in the current climate.

He’s making 10M/year!! How about 17 his concerns! STFU or get out (not you specifically, more Dabo).

Let me guess, you give 10% to Pinelake every week?

I can bltch. I’m a nobody making shlt money in Nowhereville, USA. Dabo can go get 17ed if he wants to bltch.

First time poster. But I couldn’t let this go. This made me swallow my post coffee morning dip. That’s funny as hell.

The constantly bringing up Pinelake is getting old in a hurry. Is it shorthand for Christianity in general? Evangelicalism? Or is it just that popular=bad?

Now tithing is something worthy of ridicule? That’s absurd.

As for Dabo, it really is adapt or die. Or stick to your principles, retire, and go live life and enjoy the gobs of money you made.
Nick Saban didn’t want to deal with what college football has become/is becoming, so he hung it up. I realize he’s nearly 20 years older than Dabo, it’s not a 1:1 comparison.

I seriously doubt that. He once said that we would quit coaching college football if players got paid. Sounds like he’s also a liar.
This is what he said

Who knows what’s going to happen down the road? I have no idea,” Swinney said. “I just try to be great where my feet are. That’s my focus every day. Who knows? They may do away with college football in three years. There may be no college football. They may want to professionalize college athletics. Well, then, maybe I’ll go to the pros. If I’m going to coach pro football, I might as well do that. I may get a terrible president or a terrible AD one day. I don’t know. I have no idea what’s down the road. But I know what we have at Clemson is special, and I wanted to make a commitment to the university. That’s what the message of the contract was.”

I guess Dabo will add Dan Patrick to the list of blackballed people he will no longer talk to

I might be a little slow at times but it seems to me, that the closer these coaches get to making powerball payday 10 year $100M contracts, the better they are at selling believable BS like it is chocolate cake. All of them do it, Saban, Fisher, Dabo, Kelly, all of them.

The bottom line is Dabo is being paid a LOT of money to win games at an elite level. His personal opinions (right or wrong) about the current system are irrelevant. He's flat out stealing money from Clemson right now. He will adapt or he will be pushed out.

It sure helped him to have two generational QB’s within two years of one another. That part of it was not sustainable. And he hasn’t built the rest of the ship well enough to win without an elite QB.

Agreed. You're making $100M guaranteed. Win and shut up dude. You're the highest paid "player". Play and win and don't make excuses.

Who was the WR from Bama that showed promise but quickly got in Leech's doghouse? Was that Shavers?
