I don’t get why this is confusing to people. Women’s basketball is mostly not a revenue sport. As great as she is at what she does, what she does doesn’t generate revenue, or not much, for the school. The latest figures I can find show our women’s team with about $9.5 million in revenue and a little over $9 million in expenses. Based on that you could argue that Dawn is overpaid.

OK, by same standards USC Men BB generated $12.6M with $11.8 expenses (close to the same profit). So Paris and Dawn should make about the same (Paris makes about twice as much) - and Dawn wins way, way more.
The men’s team turns a profit. The women’s team does not.

As I’ve said before, even if I’m the worlds best booger picker, it doesn’t mean I deserve to get paid millions for it.

I think things are trending with Men's Basketball and Women's College Basketball being very similar revenue wise and I think the salaries will follow. With the combination of One-and-Done and the Transfer Portal, it's just extremely difficult to keep up with the roster of teams on the Men's side. On the Women's Side, there is more time to build stars with players staying 3-4 years. Now, that has not come close to translating on the professional level. However, I know I was more drawn to the Women's side this year because of the storylines and I am as hardcore of a Men's basketball guy as it gets. Just extremely hard to build support for star players that you will only see for 3 or 4 months on the Men's side.

Haven't checked your numbers, however, by the numbers the OP presented, the women's side did.

Well if Dawn made "twice as much" as she does now, a pay equal to Paris, the program wouldnt generate "close to the same profit."
Im so tired of her whiney arrogant ***.

What used to be just business is now the DEI business, that's the problem.
Comw on man. Everything is not DEI. This take is as bad as women thinking everything in business is about breaking a Glass Ceiling. What I would say to Dawn is that a version of what you would like to see will come in time. Also, part of the issue is on women themselves. They hate on each other too much and that slows whatever they are trying to accomplish.

The impact of DEI and ESG on business decisions has been extremely detrimental to businesses. The business landscape is now littered with bankruptcies, layoffs, decreased wages, etc. as a result of business decisions based on factors other than sound, profitable business decisions. College sports is one of those businesses.
I see every day out in the business world.

You can intelligently oppose initiatives without erroneously applying it to everything. The joke in my circles now is: Minority says something and it's DEI. However, the funny thing is that the same people against DEi want it when it comes to successful institutions that have been traditionally set up for minorities. Like the lawsuit against a foundation set up for minority women business owners or the effort to limit Black medical students at Howard University. So, we want to exclude you from our institutions and at the same time limit you from helping yourself. We want a part of that too. What the heck?

Would you like to coach for less? I'm sure you would dominate!
No, I don't think I would be a good coach. But I don't think contracts should be written to pay an ex-coach millions of dollars not to coach. That is what I mean by "out of whack".

In general, I don’t get the forced feminization of America. Everyone wants to prove women’s sports are as good as men sports, they obviously are not. Due to your biology, they simply cannot be. They’re wanting to make the women more masculine and the men more sensitive and emotional…feminine.

Most people are tired of the constant chatter concerning people's differences. No group should be disrespected and no group should be celebrated. All of that just serves to divide.
As Aaron Lewis says.... You do you and I'll do me.

The more divided a society is, the easier it is to control.

It’s all in the name of “equality.” The loonies in our country believe that EVERYTHING must be equal no matter what. Obviously that’s not the case, and that goes both ways. In general, men are naturally more gifted physically. The problem really lies with people that believe this makes women inferior. Our God created men and women differently for distinct purposes and roles. Men are naturally more physically gifted to be providers and protectors. Just like women are naturally more instinctive in a nurturing sense. Any decent father will tell that there are things your wife knows with your kids and how to handle them that we as men just cannot understand naturally because we weren’t created that way. Again, the problem really lies with those that think that former is more important or valuable than the latter. There are no mistakes in how men and women are created. But it baffles so many morons that the more we try and change God’s design the more chaotic and destructive our society becomes.

I’m thrilled that we have her as our coach but she does not understand business.
Perhaps you don’t.

The USC WBB team has generated more “goodwill” for our University than any other sport in the history of our school. The 2010-2011 baseball teams (which I memorialize along with others on my license plate) being a close second. Goodwill is not money. Goodwill is an “intangible asset”! Goodwill has a real definition if you care to look it up.

In the business world and in accounting this a a real live “number” in a business valuation and a real number on your balance sheet if you buy or acquire it and you will pay for it. I think a number of you are ignoring the true value of Dawn Staley to your University and our community and the state.

I’m quite familiar with the term. It’s usually something a company is giving away, at no cost to the customer . For instance, you just lost your transmission on a car that is no longer under warranty. The dealer appreciates you as a repeat customer agrees to go ahead and replace your transmission at no cost to you. That’s “Goodwill” and is listed that way on the dealer’s books.

Carolina WBB is a valuable asset to both the University plus the SEC. When the SEC is negotiating TV contracts for the SEC non-revenue sports, WBB basketball is part on the "Olympic Sport" contract - separate from football and Men's basketball. Because USC WBB is so popular (USC/LSU regular season game had better ratings than Celtics/Heat game opposite it), that it drives up the value of the Olympic Sport contract. So in effect, WBB is helping to support Olympic Sports for both the University and the SEC.

Goodwill don't pay the bills.

Football pays the bills. Almost every other sport exists at the school due to football's benevolence.

WBB is simply an inferior product. It's slower and less athletic in every way. No way around that. Junior high boys are more athletic. Simple fact.

Granted, some people actually like WBB. But, then, there are people who bought the Yugo.

Curious as to whether her athletes all make the same thing under her. Also wonder if she would be in favor of them being paid the same as the women's basketball team at places like Winthrop since bottom lines are usually cast aside in socialistic proposals.

This is really the bottom line. If the market demanded it, she'd make more. The market doesn't.

Labor is not inherently valuable.
These draconian ideals towards wbb are just not correct. In every way and in venues the women this past year in College outdrew the mens bball. As one poster stated earlier, not only did the SC/LSU outdraw the Celtics/Heat head tohead, the womens championship viewers outpaced the men bb championship the next night and ticket prices were much more costly to try and attend the wbb championship. Right now, open surveys state that students are interested and/or even drawn to the University because of the popularity of the wbb team, and tuition is the most valuable assest to a University. The women's game may have lagged behind in the past, but the fact that they stay for four years in college and their almost obsessive fan bases are growing exponentially, the business influencers will look to capitalize on their popularity whether the old dude that has his head stuck in the mud wants them to be important or not.

Ad price for women's tournament games is half the price of that for men.

Dawn is a heck of a coach! I really enjoy watching the teams she coaches, and the player development that comes from playing for a knowledgeable coach.

I sometimes disagree with her politics, but she is entitled to her opinions. I am intentionally staying out of this conversation since there are already strong opinions on this thread.

Conveyed value only goes so far. Many people with special interests in an organization overstate conveyed value, as with goodwill, because it cannot be quantified with certainty. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, only that it is almost impossible to pinpoint.

I am curious how you came to that conclusion and what your references are. I mean I can see where having the number one women's team in the nation may have a comparable attendance (average per game) to a men's team that is not a top team. (Total yearly attendance not being comparable given the number of additional games a top seed in the women's game would play at home in the postseason.)
But what I hear you saying is a far more blanket statement than that... as if the women have passed the men in every way across the country. I find hard to believe. Care to be more specific?

I enjoy watching our women’s team. It’s a successful USC team that may not be super athletic, but it’s a good enough product for me to enjoy. That being said, I also wouldn’t make a special trip to Cola and pay for tickets to watch a game either.

Not “super-athletic”. YouTube Ashlyn Watkins or MiLaysia Fulwily. They’re pretty athletic. Maybe Joyce Edwards might be pretty athletic. Relative to their competition they are super athletic. Not busting you or anything but I just can’t agree with your observation.

Not quite. Goodwill is a concept that changes the valuation of something. Perhaps you could think of it as “brand” recognition. If you were to acquire one of two organizations and one had a ton of goodwill and the other did not. You would pay more for to acquire the organization with good will than the one who didn’t.

The good will you are describing is something different. If I’m trying to create goodwill by comping a tab or discounting a service that creates “goodwill”, but “having” goodwill due to name recognition, product popularity, demand for viewing or a recognizable and popularity is a different concept.

Real goodwill creates value. The Gamecock WBB team has generated a ton of goodwill.

Go back and research the stories on this past year's womens bball ticket prices, original and on the market. The men's ticket was not even in the neighborhoold. There werer people payingh up to 2000K to sit in the lower bowl and courtside for the women. You could purchase a mens' final four ticket the day of the game for $130. Also I noticed you did not even address the peak viewership for both events. This is easily verifiable as every sports network reported on it and it is still be discussed today as the networks move into their new contract negotiations with the women's tournament.
