My theory would be that the Big Ten hasn't performed nearly as badly as you seem to think it has. There were no great teams in the conference this season, just a lot of good teams.
Based on Kenpom's numbers, here were the chances of every team still being alive heading out of this weekend...
Iowa - 60.4%
Purdue - 50.5%
Wisconsin - 34.8%
Illinois - 28.2%
Michigan State - 17.2%
Ohio St - 16.9%
Michigan - 16.0%
Indiana - 7.0%
Rutgers - 3.8%
This means we should expect to have about 2.348 teams left heading into next weekend. Should Purdue win this one, we'd be hitting a pretty likely result.

Even if PSU were a perennial tournament team, most of us would wish the worst for the rest of the b1g. PSU success and f*ck the b1g are not mutually exclusive.
