based on dude's bio, I'm not sure he's ready... could we have gotten someone else with more experience and proven ability?

does this choice mirror the offensive coord situation currently in place?

how many offensive coord would still have their job after the production mccorvey has put up?...hasn't he been OC since day one with croom? was this promotion of dude to DC made under the same mindset that croom has with mccorvey?

I'm hoping I'm wrong on all.. however if we SUCK AGAIN on offense this year and croom keeps mccorvey, we are in deep do do for quite a while

"based on dude's bio, I'm not sure he's ready"

Well, he did spend 4 years as Bama's WR coach to start the millenium, dont all DC's start off that way?

"could we have gotten someone else with more experience and proven ability?"

With Crooms's offense, it would have been hard to get a really good DC with experience. But at least we could have tried.

"how many offensive coord would still have their job after the production mccorvey has put up"

None. But the thing is, this is Crooms offense and the way he wants it done. Thats why Woody doesnt get fired. Our offense is doing exactly what Crooms wants it to.

As of right now, I'm not holding my breath. He does meet the "coached at 'bama" qualification though. And that's a big big plus!

that was his first job, right? What's that? He coached defensive backs for 20 years before that? Oh, so Coach is just being a goddamn moron aGAIN? OK, that's what I thought too.

I think our defense is the least of worries with our football team. It stands to reason our defensive philosophy will remain much the same, which is probably what Croom wanted.

I think Woody has a job because Croom was actually calling the plays at least for the first year or so. Not Woody's fault that Croom sux as OC. Woody didn't know anything about WC offense so Croom was calling the plays. I wonder if Woody is calling plays yet?

I agree with HD6 here. I like the fact that we will have some continuity with our defensive philosophy since he was here last year and knows the system. And he was the coach of our defensive backfield who seemed to be pretty damn strong . of course this is sixpack and we have plenty of idiots here that are more worried ahbout internet cred than anything so I am not even sure what the point of arguing with them is.

that none of the top DC's in the nation or the SEC were coaching the opposite side of the ball within 5 years of being promoted to DC. There's a reason for that.</p>

I said when EJ left we wouldnt bring in an experienced DC, and guess what happened? We didnt. Imagine that. We'll see how it works out soon enough. Hopefully he works out well.</p>

so why should we expect him to conduct a search ? And this from Croom`s own mouth. <p class="textBodyBlack"><span id="byLine"></span>"There's a constant chatter about hiring black head coaches, but before that happens ... head coaches have to start hiring guys to be coordinators. Until that happens we're not going to get guys to be head coaches,'' said Croom, who became the first black head coach in Southeastern Conference history when he was hired by Mississippi State after the 2003 season. "I think in a lot of ways we got the cart before the horse on this issue.''</p> So did Croom hire the best guy or follow some sort of personal agenda ? Basically only time will tell.

Care to share it, jackass? Or is just a reason you made up? Because as I look back on the secondaries he coached, some pretty good units there. So past performance couldn't have been the problem. He coached wideouts very early in his career, could it be that Alabama just wanted him on staff and didn't have a spot for him in the secondary? Could that be the reason, you incredible douche?

It would be difficult for him to hire a quality DC due to our pitiful offense. There have been rumors of some infighting between Johnson and the offensive staff. I can definitely tell you I'm sure there have been some very heated discussions due to our offensive offense. Its only natural.</p>

So, we got the Harbison hire so we can "stay within our same defensively philosophy". And that may indeed be a great thing. Or it may not workout. This season will tell.

Charlie may indeed be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but to call someone a moron because they question the fact he spent some years as a WR coach recently and has never been a DC? Thats a little strong, even for your weak mind. Most people that have a little sense would be apprehensive about whats to take place this Fall. You act like it was a no-brainer. I'm looking forward to seeing what takes place this year- Crooms most important season as head coach.</p>

include what will arguably be one of the best secondaries in the sec. The overall team should be better as well. There will be no excuse for taking a step backward defensively.

open for questioning... along with his comments to the media about the importance of hiring black coordinators... what about making sure the best available and willing to come to MSU candidate get a shot?... if it's a 50/50 based on qualifications and potential and croom wants to go for the black guy for the above said reasons, then fine...I'm ok with that...

hiring EJ turned out great obviously.. but hanging on to mccorvey has got to be the most bone headed HC decision I've seen in a long time.. so far he has an A+ with EJ but a flat out F- with mccorvey..

are you convinced that croom hires for the betterment of MSU football and personal favors for folks he likes has nothing to do with it? having folks you like working underneath you is important...I realizie that...but you better damn well be sure that they also are within the same small window of competence of others that you passed by...

this season will tell us a lot... and if it doesn't go well, his decisions at season's end will tell us a lot also..</p>

Didn't he hire EJ? Isn't EJ white? I think it's retarded to think Croom hired based off personal agenda. I think it was basically to keep continuity, because we have so many starters back on defense. Also, Harbison did a really good job with the secondary last year and is a proven veteran coach. I think he deserved the opportunity. I don't think Croom is going to put his job in jeopardy over a personal agenda. As far as that statement goes, it's just a proven fact.

is that Saban didnt keep Harbison on when he got the job. Harbison had worked for Saban at LSU and had been at Bama 4 years establishing recruiting ties. Yet, he wasnt kept. Interesting.

most recent hires? Who'd he hire last year for D-line coach? How about receivers coach? Secondary coach? Cornerbacks? A trend? I think so but I don't care who's coaching who if we're winning but Coach and others do have a valid point when questioning Croom's motives. If you don't feel Croom's responsibility to carry the torch in order to get more black coaches recognized then you evidently didn't pay much attention to his ESPN special nor have you painfully watched his nauseating loyalty to Woodrow. I look at it this way, you produce, then great but if you don't, you better be held to the same measure that anybody else would.

clean house when they're hired?

I doubt Saban fired him because he was a bad coach- our play in the secondary suggests otherwise.

Also, it wasn't like Saban kept the entire staff and just fired Harbison.</p>
I will say this- I am concerned about Harbison's lack of experience as a DC more than anything. He may turn out to be great, but it's certianly a risk. He does have some players to work with, so that's a plus. He could turn out to be Ellis Johnson II or he could be Ron Cooper II.

Also, if Croom insists on running the WCO and keeping McCorvey, he oughta just make Woody the assistant HC and bring in Al Borges, who knows how to run the darn thing.

So you are upset that our defensive coordinator has spent 6 years coaching on the offensive side of the ball, but you decide to overlook the <span style="font-weight: bold;">12 years</span> he has spent coaching defense which included coaching at least 3 NFL players? Completely logical reasoning.

there are more blacks on the staff of the 1st black head coach in the SEC and to some, that does send mixed messages whether it's intentional or not. If roles were reversed all things considered, questions would be raised. What brought this discussion up to begin with was someone's concern over a first year DC and the process for which he was hired. This would be a non-issue if not for Croom's obvious hand-out outreach program he provides to Woody. No, let me rephrase that....WE provide to Woody.

Croom is just now pleased with assistant coaching salaries. I wonder how much our prior $ situation had to do with looking at quality OC and DC candidates.

That said, I'm still reasonably sure our DC is will be a decent DC.

although EJ did do a fantastic job for most of the year; he did have some games where I would think "what the <17> are we doing?". Perfect example: @ South Carolina we could not stop them from completing 10-15 yard passes over the middle. They drove right down the field at least twice on us late in the game to score and put the game out of reach. Also, the first quarter of the WVU game was one of the worst defensive displays I have ever seen; and we couldn't stop Arkansas either, our offense just happened to play well that game so it didn't seem so bad.

I am not saying EJ was not a good DC, but I am saying that it may have had more to do with our players either actually playing hard or not trying at all; and with most of our defensive players returning, I'm pretty confident that we will be good no matter who is the coordinator.

actually, it's not amusing, it's pretty much par for the course with you, that you think it's a negative that a guy who's spent all those years being a successful defensive backs coach can switch over to offense, and be successful there as well. How on earth is that a bad thing? Oh, Croom supported it, that's how.

By the way, I was just wondering what you are planning on using as your cute little nickname for Cohen? You got Stains and Crooms, how about Co-Co?

Are the coaches he hired not considered good coaches though? I mean because they are black and Croom is black (which I didn't know until this thread) that's the only reason he hired them? Turner did a great job with the guys last year as did the secondary coaches. Croom has 4 white coaches and 4 black coaches on staff and people want to question his motives. That's ridiculous to say the least. You can leave the Woodrow **** at the door also. I'm a firm believer that McCorvey isn't the one calling the plays and that's the reason he hasn't been fired yet. If Croom fired the one calling the ****** plays, then he would have to fire himself.

there are more blacks on the staff of the 1st black head coach in the SEC and to some, that does send mixed messages whether it's intentional or not.
There aren't more black coaches on staff. I guess since Saban's only has 2 black coaches on staff, then he is a racist trying to keep the black man down. If we have a ****** defense this year and Croom keeps Harbison at D-Co., then yeah you will have a valid point on Croom's motives. Right now you are basing it on Croom promoting a guy of the same race that has over 20 years of coaching experience and had alot to do with our gameplanning last year. So yeah I think it's retarded.

in the same month . That`s strong . Spurrier hired the guy so he must not have read as much into your perfect example as you did and LSfreakingU couldn`t stop Arkansas at home to all but guarantee themselves a shot at the BCS title game so you got no point there. We lost a hell of a DC and hired a rookie to replace him for (at best) questionable reasons.

and it's logical to presume that he thought we were sending a message..so now he's opening it more. He may have an agenda, sadly. It's hard to believe that he didn't go outside for that hire...typical old school thinking..isn't he buddies with Polk?

Are our fans really this stupid? Is there really a significant portion of our fanbase that immediately assumes the worst at all times? I mean, yeah, the usual suspects of stupidity are here including coach, thatsbaseball and a few others, but Jesus, when is enough enough? The guy has coached 20 years of D1 football at its highest level as an assistant, I think he's qualified to become a DC. No, we didn't just hire the biggest name coach in the country, but before the guy has coached a down in the SEC, some of our fans want to pull the race card??? On Croom??? What in the blue hell is next?

what's that supposed to mean? Anyway, we may have 4 and 4 in terms of race but I think the argument here that some have is the simple fact that Mississippi State showed alot of diversity in it's hiring of Croom and some may like to see the same from him. So we're 4 and 4 white/black on the staff. Well if you count Croom himself, it's 5-4 but who's keeping score? I mean, which 3 guys are the highest paid? Which 3 have the most control? Woody's actual title is Assistant Head Coach/OC. God forbid we make our head assistant anyone and I do mean ANYONE else.</p>

That's something else I find interesting. If you notice EJ's 2 schools he was hired at were with first off (for a few days anyway) Petrino and then his permanent job with Spurrier. I don't think it's a coincidence he wanted to make damn sure he had some help on the other side of the ball.

about the virtues of hiring white coordinators and then proceeded to keep a pitiful white offensive coordinator on staff (and even get him a raise) and hire an in-experienced white guy to be his d-coordinator without even interviewing anyone and a black guy like yourself questioned it would that make you stupid ?

Mccorvey is a negative but EJ was a great hire. Then look at all the guys that have been lured away by good programs/teams: E.J., Drayton, Beamer, Kitchens, Haley.

Wait a minute. Before this gets completely out of hand, let's bring some perspective. Croom "may" be right about artificial barriers to head coaching positions. But regardless, we now have an AD who is looking for results and apparently has balls big enough to step up to the plate and do what has to be done even when it may piss off lots of people. If Croom wants to hire disaffected colleagues, that's his prerogative. If Croom wants to hire disaffected colleagues and keep throwing up 3-9s, something tells me his *** will be disaffected out the door.
