Did MSU football improve in 2009?

The O, yes, much improved... The D, no not really, especially considering that the O held the ball much more. Yes, we had more turnovers.

Otherwise, shush don't tell the rest of the world.

We added Houston and Florida to our schedule, and a newly improved Arkansas offense. What the hell else did everyone think was gonna happen? The overall defensive scheme of throwing in 3 down lineman here and there was prettty dumb, but overall, considering we had someone new start at 8 of 11 spots on defense compared to last year, I think we did ok. Lots of young, new faces. Think about it this way. We had Boyd, Cox, White, Banks, Broomfield, Anderson, Langston, and McPhee all getting significant playing time having not played at all last year. The only people this year that started most of the year from their position last year was Charles Mitchell, KJ, Sean Ferguson sort of, and Marcus Washington. Jamar had to come off an injury, and didn't play at all last year. I think for the youth that we had, and that Zac Smith and Marcus Washington playing as much as they did, we did alright, especially against the higher powered offenses we went up against compared to last year.

Did not say it was horrible, just my opinion, that it was not equal to some recent prior defenses...

Elis made a difference to me, not going overboard here.

Even Elis had a problem with some of the high octane offenses.

OK, we have this new, young, hip exciting offense. We have a coach that is new, young, and hip to go with it- he's calling out **+@ even. And better yet hasn't said much, if anything about Bear Bryant. The less the better.

BUT

and this is odd to me- we hire a has been DC to run a boring defense rushing three people? WTF? We're the school that Joe Lee Dunn is probably most associated with for Heaven's sakes.

Why not hire someone to run an aggressive, blitz heavy, organized chaos defense to go with our offense? Can you imagine how much fun that would be with Dan's offense? And it's not like something like that hasn't worked at MSU before. To me, it's a very similar principle as the spread offense principle of getting athletes in space in one on one match-ups. Get a bunch of Mississippi boys that like to hit, and send them after the QB. We could have a top 20 offense AND top 20 defense. In the SAME year. That should be good enough to win plenty of games in the SEC and get us to a good bowl. Who wants to play zone all the time? These guys want to make plays, get sacks, and blow people up. And I want to see people blown up as a fan. I want to see us make Jevean Snead throw up because we knocked the ever living crap out of him a la Tom Luke. Read and react my ***. GO GET THE QB AND KNOCK HIM OUT! Pressure is the key to good defense. And when you send more people than the other team can block, and you do it from weird places, you cause confusion and force mistakes. Joe Lee Dunn's defense stopped working in part because he pared it down and other teams knew what we were doing. When Joe Lee was in his heyday, putting nine DB's in the game against UK, was when it was at its best. And there are enough athletes in this state that we can find a couple that can play corner.

Plus, if you believe the rumors that Dan and Carl Torbush didn't always get along, his fate was sealed probably after the Auburn game.

So for me, it's basically this- effective and boring vs effective and fun. I would like to see us choose effective and fun.

One of the biggest improvements was in our special teams play. It's amazing what a good kicker (or two) and a good punter can do for you.

He knows how I feel.

Actually, it would probably be better to send it to Dan. Wille 17 Martinez? Seriously?

Of course it helps that Nebraska has a guy that would be in the Pro Bowl if he were in the NFL at DT, but I always thought thay Pelini was a good DC.
