I don't know about winning the national championship. I do believe the Tennessee loss that year was easily the costliest of the SEC era - a complete lack of timely offense against a team we should have blown away.

Yeah, can't say we would have won, but we'd have had a shot. We just no-showed.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that was the game in which Shaw threw his only interception of the season, and it was a doozy.
I can't remember the particulars beyond the fact that, when a play was there to be made on offense or needed to be made, it was invariably not made.
