Did the sun come up this morning? Everyone back away from the ledge? Were you not entertained?

Why not? They have beaten us more than we have beaten O$U during Franklin era.
Stop it. Talk about this year, because that’s what matters. Minny lost to a basketball school and backup QB earlier this year. They haven’t played a single team with a GOOD defense yet. They only way they win is if this team of ours decides to mentally check out, which is possible. I’m more worried about Washington at this point.

Minnesota will have a very good chance of beating Penn State. I worry about a Washington too.

Our inability to stretch the field makes Penn State vulnerable to a lot of teams (see Bowling Green).

I watched the game, expecting a loss, but hoping a for a win to satisfy some of my Penn State friends whose spirits rise and fall based opon the athletic prowess of kids a third their age, some making more than triple their income. Sadly, the result was predictable and so I quoted a man they all respect. It was 1968, and a guy named Joe said....
"We're trying to win football games, don't misunderstand that, but I don't want it to ruin our lives if we lose. I don't want us ever to become the kind of place where an 8-2 season is a tragedy. Look at the day outside. Its clear, its beautiful, the leaves are turning, the land is pretty and it's quiet. If losing a game made me miserable, I couldn't enjoy such a day."

Yes. Times have changed, but the message still resonates.
RIP Coach.

Me at the airport this morning, wearing a PSU jacket:

TSA agent: Tough loss yesterday.

Me: Sadly, it’s the same thing every year.

TSA agent: That’s James Franklin for you.

Me: 😞

TSA agent: Franklin just can’t bring in a top wide receiver who can get downfield.

Me: He used to — Godwin, Hamler, Dotson. Just not the last couple of years.

TSA agent: Maybe he needs more NIL money.

Me: It isn’t really the PSU way, but I can’t argue with you.

TSA agent: That’s the name of the game today.

Me: 😞

I’m such an a$$hole. Seriously, who wears a PSU jacket to Newark Airport the day after that loss? 😞
Admirals club there is sweet . The made to order avocado toast is great . Otherwise that airport is no bueno .

The insanity of doing the same crap year after year and expecting different results is mind numbing. Losing doesn’t bother Franklin. If it did he wouldn’t accept the results he’s had doing what he’s doing for the past 10 years in games against top 5
teams.

As fans of this team, we need accept these results just like Franklin accepts them. He will never beat OSU again.
Already accepted the verdict well before yesterday.

Already accepted the verdict well before yesterday. At no point yesterday did I think we would win that game. And more broadly, I no longer believe in this program in so far as it being a true, legitimate contender. I’ll never stop being a huge fan in our student athletes, but until changes are made at the top of the program, we are at our ceiling.

Top 10? Sure…in a good year.

Top 5? Nope…not nearly as close as the program wants us to believe it is.

But he fought like the devil to win every game…and to do it the right way…and he won more than anyone and was at his very best in the biggest games.

Dont think it has anything at all to do with “the sun coming up”. It’s the frustration for fans of losing games they could have won year in and year out with stupid mistakes and horrible play calling. Yes the sun came up, thank god, but that ain’t the point.

I stopped getting ON the ledge at all after PSU losses years ago… during some of Joe’s later “off” years to be honest.

There was a time when this kind of moment ruined not just the next 24 hours for me, but the next week at a minimum. Minnesota ‘99 leaps to mind as one of the biggest stingers, but there were others.

Somewhere along the way I managed to shift my perspective and enjoy it when Penn State wins, yet remember the many more important things in life when we lose. I feel bad for our guys when this happens, but I no longer slide into the personal doldrums over it. For some this would be called “settling for less” and I get that, but for me it’s a much healthier approach to this particular interest of mine and a whole lot of other things, honestly.

Hey, remember we’re “lucky to be playing at all” right? I know in late 2011 and for a while thereafter, I could not have envisioned us sniffing 10 or 11 win seasons again in my lifetime… and the SOB ref who said that sure didn’t. So eff him I say — and for me, the best revenge in this case is living reasonably well, even if not natty-elite-level well.

Just my perspective these days, not a lecture to any among us who ARE feeling stronger feels over this.
You and I have a similar bond because the '99 loss to Minnesota was the absolute worst loss I've experienced and it caused my loved ones to confront me with my horrid behavior after a Penn state football loss. The worst part of that loss was it precipitated two consecutive losses and effectively knocked Penn State out of consideration for the first championship of the inaugural BCS Championship.

Seeing everyone lose their minds makes me think big picture. It's a game that was created to help young men, most not old enough to drink legally or buy alcohol, to burn off excess energy and all that testerosterone.

Did the sun come up this morning? Everyone back away from the ledge? Were you not entertained? Did the earth fall off its axis? Is there anything more important going on in the world? With your life? What's that definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. It's not like we did something incredibly stupid like run the ball three times in a row down on the goal line for no yards. Oh wait.
Actually I feel fine. Why? I had low expectations of a win as unfortunately OSt has superior skill players in many positions. Add to that a head coach known for mostly missing the mark in top 15 games and you have a mixed brew that simply does not work In marquee contests . Will PSU win the vast majority of games on each years schedule ? yes they will. That fact is acceptable to the Administration and a fairly significant portion of the fan base. I do have hope that we qualify for our first Playoff with a rebound vs a very beatable Washington being the beginning of a strong finish. After that….who knows

Were you at the game in person? I was there, sitting behind the north end zone goal post where that game-ending field goal by Minny sailed through the uprights but felt more like a dagger sliding between my ribs and right into my heart.

Never will I forget the roar of the crowd that had been wildly cheering on our guys (especially LaVar) to block it, instantly being replaced by the stunned silence that settled over the stadium. I’ve never experienced anything quite like the deflation of that moment.

Ugh :/

I’m grateful I’ve somehow transitioned to a state where the outcome of a football game doesn’t affect me that way anymore. No idea how I got here, but yeah i am glad of it.

Now for a confession… I didn’t even watch most of Saturday’s game. I absolutely intended to, and was excited and hopeful we could win. Then two very close buddies of mine dating back to middle school (I turn 54 in a few weeks) texted and wanted to hang out Saturday afternoon. They’re NFL fans, not college football followers. So as much as I love my Nittany Lions, I chose to spend the afternoon with my friends — figuring I’ll maybe see them on at most maybe one other weekend over the course of this season. Had a great time and a lot of laughs. Every time it works out that I get to hang out with them puts a very solid W on my personal record :)

Good story and perspective.

I was at both the '99 Minnesota game and the 6-4 iowa.
I think the 6-4 game was such a terrible loss because it showed how bad the offense was.
The Minni loss was just unlucky and I think the PSU team thought they could not lose.

I was at the 6-4 debacle as well, and I agree with your take on both games. Two very different experiences, neither of them fun for us though.

6-4 was the drawn out misery of seeing our offense look completely impotent. The smug overconfidence of Iowa taking the second safety intentionally left such a bitter taste in my mouth.

Minny ‘99 was the sudden shock of feeling the lofty goals of the season evaporate in an instant.

Unfortunately, I was stuck in Michigan and had to watch that debacle with both MSU and UM fans. F-cking nightmare. I'm finally over it though.

97 Michigan was equally as demoralizing. At no point in time did it feel like PSU had a chance in that game despite lofty rankings.

Minny looked awful today against a Rutgers team missing their top offensive threat. I’m still not very worried about them - need to see a p*ssed off and hungry Penn State tonight. Especially after the Miami loss. We still have an awful lot to play for.
