You're the one claiming to be so "knowledgeable in how college football coaching staffs work" (in your original post), tell us his role since there seems to only be one other one in the country........

Running backs coach. Hughes never coached the position so Knox was brought in to help. Hughes was kept on staff for recruiting not coaching

Maybe he was able to help Hughes with pointers about coaching running backs, but as stated above, he was not allowed to actually instruct players. I'm ok with Coach Knox being retained as a running back coach since that was not a sore spot this year like the o line, receivers, and quarterbacks.
