I'd love to have Pitino here, but I think he's at home at St. Johns though unless a true blue blood comes calling.

I'd love to have had Richard Pitino, and he was rumored if I remember correctly when either Stans or Howland left. He was really young when Stans left, and he ended up taking the Minnesota job. He's at UNM now and I'm sure he'll get another big job soon.

Bottom line though is we're not firing a coach who made three straight tourneys, and we would be really dumb to do so.

He was just hired by Xavier.

He(Richard not Rick) should do really well there. No football at Xavier to compete for resources with. Basically the only show in town on that campus. Definitely could see him at blue blood or close to it if he does well.

I'm confused on why we would ditch Jans. I'm amazed at the reaction by our fanbase to a coach who is batting 1.000 on making the tournament. State has made the tournament 14 times in their history. He owns 3 of them.
Mississippi state fans absolutely lose their minds when OM is good. If OM had an early exit or didn’t make the tournament, people would be fine.

I get being disappointed in the end of the season, but I am still excited for basketball. I hope when UM is out of the tournament people will stop letting the generally decrepit state of our football and baseball programs sour them on a basketball program that is still in pretty good shape and in great shape historically.

Jans is the best coach on campus.

I think the problem is that we just aren't a fun team to watch. We don't have consistent dynamic scorers. Our best scorer has to work extremely hard to get his shots. And then we've lost some games we shouldn't have and have left some opportunities on the table.

If he can get the portal haul right this go round, We'll be okay. Wanting to move on from Jans is silly. But we have to get better at evaluating portal talent - we've had some pretty big whiffs two years in a row.

The next hire would make Rick Ray look like John Wooden if we did.

Next season will be an intriguing one for me. In theory, we should be looking at two all SEC caliber players in Hubbard and Murphy to build around, one of the better freshmen classes that we're ever going to get, and 3-5 portal transfers. If Jans can finally hit on a few portal guys that can consistently contribute, I feel like it's the do or die season for him.

It's been wild watching this tournament and realizing that it's a college basketball who's who of the same coaches that have seemingly always found a way to win games when it matters. Pearl, Izzo, Barnes, Cal, Pitino, Smart... Then on the other side, you have the guys that can get here like Penny and Jans, but can't seem to ever win. By no means am I ready to move on from Jans, but there's something to that

So let me ask you this - would you move on from Jans if he really never experiences tournament success....like Stansbury did? Some were ready to move on from Stansbury b/c he would never truly experience success. I just hope we learned our lesson. We are in rarified air in regards to our basketball program as it concerns appearances.

Stans didn’t get fired because he couldn’t make it out of the first weekend. He got fired because he stopped making the tourney altogether. Even after all the locker room shenanigans, we kept him around and he would’ve kept his job if the 2012 team doesn’t collapse massively and miss the tournament.

If Stans never made it past the first weekend but was still making the tourney regularly or semi-regularly, he’s probably still our coach today.

At some point you have to experience some success. I think that's fair.

If we make it a habit of falling to the 8/9 line because we limped to the end of the season, and then make a quick exit, at some point that has to change. As expectations are met, subsequent expectations are required.

Been watching him since his early years in Kentucky when he shook his fist at our fans during what I think was his first visit to the hump.
When we parted ways with Howland, he was my choice.

Success is the appearance. I want to win games in the tourney and you can be disappointed but if we ever move on from a coach because they have not won enough in the ncaa tournament - I'll sell sixpack to coach34**.

That is still way above our historical average.

A little history: We have been to THREE Sweet 16s. One was back in the old days and we got a by to get there. We have only won our way into it in the tournament TWICE, in 1995 and 1996. We have only been in the Round of 32 six times. 95, 96, 02, 04, 05, and 08. Stans had four of those. Firing him like we did was just asinine. It was BEYOND STUPID and we paid for it big time. Even DISCUSING firing Jans is asinine.

This was the only similarity to Stans is that we probably should have been in a better position to start the tournament, but if you're not going to win the first game against a 8 or 9 seed, you werent' going to have much success to begin with.

Jans has taken two teams to the NCAA and overachieved to get there. He underachieved a little bit in the regular season this year, but there was ultimately just something off about this team. A big part of it was just needing a decent three point shooter besides Hubbard, but still seems like we just didn't have it towards the end of the year. I don't really think that's a big negative reflection on Jans. Sometimes teams just don't mesh for reasons beyond talent not being a fit.

I think the only thing you can criticize Jans for is the two risks we took in the portal. One hoping that Clary would somehow not be a problem like at his prior stops. Two hoping Kuegel just needed a change of scenery. The second risk seems imminently defensible; didn't work out, but Kuegel could obviuosly play if he could keep his head on straight. Still not sure what his issue is.

But the first risk seemed like an obvious bad risk even without hindsight that you only take if it won't hammer you if it doesn't work out. Having that be our one point guard seems like a terrible decision, but I don't know what our realistic options were or what information they might have had that made it look like less of a bad bet.

Yep, Richard Williams stands alone as the only MSU BB coach to actually win his way into the 2nd weekend of the NCAA tourney and he did it twice. Of course he 'resigned' as well. And I think the whole Pitino thing is tongue and cheek. First, Jans is probably the best coach on campus at the moment and second, Rick Pitino wouldn't even consider our job much less take it.

That IS way better than what we usually do....and we fired him. It was pure stupidity. We paid for it, and in some ways still are. And now some are wanting to do it again.

It's typical in threads like these that words get put in peoples mouths or that original points get forgotten.

As a refresher, let me state aGAIN: I like Jans. I said he's the best coach we have on campus. My comments were not a criticism of him.

But we have to get better. Getting to the tournament is the goal until you get to the tournament, then you have a new goal. We've got to get incrementally better. And to say that we're exceeding expectations just because we got into a 68 tournament field, just like 14 other schools in our conference is a poor ol' state mentality. To believe that getting into the tournament is some huge accomplishment because we've only done it 14 times in our history is a poor ol' state mentality. If we're being honest, State should have been a 5 or 6 seed this year but they played their way down to the 8 line. Why isn't it valid to expect some accountability for that? Otherwise it feels like we're celebrating the fact that we backed into the tournament.

Stansbury was fired for other reasons primarily. And the Stans lovers need to come around to it and acknowledge it instead of whitewashing it.

First, I think Jans can and will get us better. Second, making a change does NOT necessarily you are getting incrementally better, in fact, there is a higher percentage chance than not that we if we hired somebody else we would get incrementally worse. This is currently the toughest the SEC has ever been to compete in for basketball.

It was still completely STUPID. He got fired because a very vocal group didn't like a certain player, who was far from the biggest problem child on the team. The same people loved THAT guy. You missed my point though, I said THE WAY we fired him, not firing him. We should have given him another year. Had he fallen on his face record wise that year, and I think he would have, then the fallout wouldn't have been so bad. It was knee jerk reaction, and the aftermath played out exactly as many of us feared it would. I would love to see a coach have the success Stans had here again. Is that what a "Stans lover" is?

It's all about meeting expectations.

Thinking "we'll never be able to do better than this coach" is also poor ol' state thining. We've got to be better than that.

When Mullen was here, the expectations were low and he met them. Then they got higher and he met them. Then they got higher and he didn't always meet them, and some people soured. Now this is where you'll tell me that it proves your point because we haven't been good sense - but that's totally unrelated to the point. Moving on from someone who's not meeting expectations and hiring the wrong coach are two different issues.

Yes, and the result was Mullen leaving. that has worked out well to you I guess. Who the next hire is has a LOT to do with how the previous guy left.

No, Stansbury got fired because he compromised himself over Syndey and ended up losing the locker room. We had a mess on our hands with players openly criticizing staff. It was impacting recruiting. It had gotten to the point of no return. He lost control of the program.

We had already fallen record wise. He had not been to the tournament for three seasons. We were a laughing stock, and he had lost the locker room. Moving on from him was 100% the right thing to do. We made a bad hire to replace him but that's a completely different issue.

Stansbury was fired because he missed the tournament three years in a row with three tournament caliber rosters. We didn’t even fire him because of Sidney. If we were going to do that, we would’ve done it after 2011. But we gave him one more year with a very good roster and he failed with that team too.

Yeah Stricklin botched the subsequent coaching search and Stans was calling coaches to tell them to turn down the job. But he absolutely failed at the end of his tenure. There was no excuse for those teams to be missing the NCAAT in a bad SEC.

Stricklin didn't botch the search. We got who we could get. Nobody wanted it because of how the firing went down,,,, AND our talent was NOT perceived to be as good as WE thought it was. I've said it before, I had really good info from more than one source about MSU basketball back then.
