Somehow, we have turned a free college education and all the associated perks into victimhood requiring retribution.
Might as well turn CFB over to the NFL for funding and make it professional football.
NFL teams can adopt their chosen college teams and maybe at least bring some stability to college rosters with binding contracts.

It has completely devalued education.

Yes, there have always been athletes in college who didn't care about the academics and got useless degrees.

But now the institutions themselves are actively encouraging it. Instead of offering the kid the life-changing opportunity of of a 100% free college education, they now dangle short-term paydays. And if you don't get what you want, transfer to 3 or 4 different schools, which is horrible from any kind of educational perspective.

This is so true. Trade School is much more lucrative with a greater ROI than a college degree.
Friends I know are killing it with plumbing, electrical, and carpentry businesses they have built.

It's reality of the sport today. I hate it, but its the facts. You want a gamechanger? you are going to have to pay.

The schools and NCAA are making money off the athletes’ name and likenesses…this was a fair and inevitable conclusion. Still needs to be tidied up before schools go bankrupt though

None of the school's money is going into this. The fans are the ones who can shut this down when they say "enough" and they stop sending in the checks and going to the games.

They were getting paid in the form of a free education, free housing, free tutoring, free healthcare, free apparel, free nutritionists, and a stipend. Many of these the typical student doesn’t have access to. There are many kids statewide/nationwide who would love to go to a specific school but can’t because they can’t afford it. These kids can pick their school and attend for free.

I have a cousin that, about 20 years ago, was granted a full ride to ECU. Top 3 in his class, 1400+ on SAT. Applied to Duke and got accepted. He got no money. Took student loans out and owed 200k+ after he graduated. I have no clue what their tuition is now.

No the decision isn't fair. Tell the same kids to go play in another league that chooses to pay them.
That is the stance that NCAA and universities should've taken. The NFL "D" league. oH... Can't fund it...not enough money? Oh well.

That is true. But even if one gets a "useless degree", he can still acquire an education - just taking courses in basic math, liberal arts, history, etc, and you are an educated, much better person for life. Employers are more likely to hire someone educated and polished than some ignorant dud.

Agree, but you do not have to pay ''college thievery'' prices to get a basic education. College has become a money-making scam, and people/parents are paying for more indoctrination than education.
In the 70's I was paying $285 per semester at Carolina.

The cost of education has far outpaced inflation. By leaps and bounds. It's ridiculous.

Partly because most of the what the University system has to offer is useless and unnecessary. All you need for an education are students, classrooms, books and teachers.

Everyone can debate education all you want, but if you want to win, this is now part of the equation. It's not up to fans to worry about anyone's education. If that's the case, it's disingenuous at best.

Odd way of looking at it, but should the military service not pay service members who joined strictly for the G.I bill and then separate after their enlistment contract?

One of the reasons that I do not mind college football athletes receive money is that they put their bodies at risk of serious danger. At any given play could be the last time that they will ever be able to walk again due to a neck, spine, knee, ankle injury. Also you can have some type of brain injury that will be long lasting and even shortening your lifespan.

I agree with your statement about cost.

But your last statement is untrue. I suppose you could learn a few things even by reading stuff on the internet, but it's not the same as immersion into college classes. You can't fully learn the sciences, for example, without laboratory classes and performing experiments, direct observation and study. And people need the guidance (and motivation) of the professors. It's very expensive, yes, but you get your money's worth for the most part.

Maybe I misunderstood what you were trying to say.

Many schools had NIL before NIL existed. They just expressed it as, "This place is like family, or this place is special." Now, we all get to participate legally.
