Do we need a backup QB from the portal?

Read an article outlining our portal needs and backup QB was at the top.

I don't agree. Reno got a year in the system. Unless the coaches think he's an absolute bust, we need to do what good programs do and simply develop the players you recruited. Trust your own process. It is, after all, YOUR process. Otherwise, you risk succumbing to FSU-type syndrome. We bring in a backup, which frustrates our current backup who ends up transferring. Then Lanorris leaves and now we have no viable QBs, so then we hit the portal again. Cutter Woods transfers. Then you're locked in the cycle of always shopping for a QB from the portal.

Now if we just need a QB for depth and to have bodies at the position, so be it.

I know it's hard to remember, but there was a time when programs actually recruited and developed players.

9nebwould think Reno is the backup, and we should be good with that. If we go portal shopping, it tells me the staff is not comfortable with him.

Shula was the QB Coach and Offensive Coordinator for the Panthers during the height of the Cam Newton era.

Yes, he was the OC in 2015 when Cam was NFL MVP, when the Panthers went to Super bowl 50

Hard to imagine picking up a QB in the portal for the sole reason to become a backup.
He is very likely in the portal hoping to escape that same situation at his present school.

We’ll probably have Doty back if need be. He can run and fill the Ashford roll.

I had no idea that Shula worked with Cam. That could be a good fit, and I’m excited to see how it works. But I think one of the best things a coordinator can do is mold his system to fit his best players. That’s what Loggains did this year, vs the year before with Rattler. And it’s not something I think Satterfield could ever do, given how much he prided himself on a complicated system that no one could ever run full speed. Ask Nebraska. So, I hope Shula has more than one trick up his sleeve, and he can work to our strengths.
