this class will not be anywhere as good as last years and that is somewhat surprising given the fact that Mullen is now fully established in the job and has had a full year to recruit.......By strong, I mean Newton, Wells, Robinson, Thompson, etc..........

you are right, at some point you do have to win some games and go bowling to take recruiting to a new level......and I think that is one of the things weighing in on Cam Newton's decision, among some other guys we have lost.....Mason too...

but I think you are wrong with the playing tyler thing....I think if we had played him, we lost a year of eligibility when he could use it to get better for a year he could play more.....no need in wasting a year where he wouldnt see significant playing time, and not being ready to play at this level as a true freshman....

include, coming from the rebel boards is that they think they are getting Thompson. Apparently the two madison central commits are calling him. They think they are getting Sanders from noxubee. The way they talk about him in code reminds me of the whole Patterson scenario from last year. By the way, someone fill me in on his trip to the cotton bowl. There is some wierd **** going on at that school.

and struggled quite a bit just in practice- against our secondary, which tells me alot...i'm not sure which games we could have won had he played, because he wasnt ready to see the field before game 6 or 7 at the earliest...

He is not much of a runner- and our WR's this past season were nowhere near ready for a sophisticated passing game...they just werent</p>

LSU, Houston & maybe even Georgia Tech are wins. It is not that we even needed a QB to make good plays to win those games. We could have won 2 if not all 3 of those games by not having bad QB play.

If he was not better than what we put on the field this past season then you better pray we get Cameron Newton.

Actually he isn't playing in the allstar game..nominated but not selected.

Only Thompson, Robinson, and Coleman selected from MS.

My bad, cue the OM is paying his way threads back up.

But it is silly for the school who has had Melvin Smith retained by 3 consecutive and different staffs to suggest impropriety. It's kind of like the Cam Newton family is on the take if he commits anywhere but MSU threads. Not suggesting you are paying (just making a point about those type of threads), but if his family is on that take, why are you guys a finalist if you aren't playing the game?

anyone critisizing Nutt for doing so and/or praising Mullen for not doing so is plain naive. My main concern about Mullen from day one was if he understood how to recruit at a lower tier school in a super conference. I still very much have that concern. None of the schools on top in this conference got there by being "choir boys" and nobody else is gonna climb that ladder living strictly by the NCAA rule book. I`ll gladly stand corrected if anyone wants to straighten me out on this.

you're looking at it through traditional MSU colored glasses (woe is us, etc.). BUT it could turn tremendously at the end, and if we beat out some of these other schools for guys like Newton and Robinson the class will be good AND a big confidence booster for coaches/fans/etc.

And in the end, Mullen will win anyway. We almost had a winning season against the hardest schedule in the country coupled with a serious talent deficiency....I ain't worried about Mullen, and anybody who is has listened to worried rebel homers too much. I'd love to win recruiting battles for stars and such for internet bragging purposes, but I can get over it pretty easily. Rebelbruiser has some pretty good rationalization excuses than work across the board for any team, so I'll just use those.

we would have been beaten worse in those 3 games with Russell at QB...Russell would not have been better than Lee in games 1-6 this season- he was not ready to play SEC football when he got to campus- our WR's also limited our passing game this season, not just Lee...we wil be much better served to have Russell playing in the future with this year to mature than throwing him in before he was ready...With Russell at QB, we probably lose to Vandy in the rain early in the season

So Tyler was not capable of throwing dump passes or quick hitters to Bumphis while not throwing 14 int's compared to 4 td's? Not to mention the number of fumbles and taking of sacks that knocked us out of fg range. I can recall at least 3 of those occasions. If Tyler Russell could not do better than that then he will never be worth a ****.

Think about Tyler as an investment. If you take an investment out of the bank before it matures completely, you do not get the full amount possible of the investment. (Don't give me any banking semantics here- I'm trying to keep this simple)

If we had used Tyler Russell this year, we probably end up with the same record that we had this year- if we win one more game we maybe go to Birmingham. Now, had we done that, we would have only had Russell for three more years, and by that time, and maybe we go to three more decent bowls and maybe even one good one. He also would have been behind the curve. Russell might have been able to maybe beat Houston or GT as you say- I don't really agree with that, but I'll go along with it- but you also run a MAJOR risk of him having a four INT game against someone like Bama- to which people would have booed his *** off of the field or lost complete confidence in him and gone on to the next "real deal".

Now, by Dan saving Tyler's RS he is going to give us a darn good chance at going to decent bowls the next three seasons and maybe even a really good one-two by the time he is a junior and then a senior. He also improved our QB situation because he made MSU attractive to a JUCO QB to come in and compete for the job- not even necessarily Newton, but any JUCO QB- which again will possibly allow Tyler to ease into SEC play without getting shellshock. Also by RS Russell, we can now recruit a JUCO QB without fear that it will upset Tyler and run the risk of him transferring- which by playing Tyler, it would have given him leverage to do so because he would have a RS year in his back pocket. See Wes Carroll. Russell also needed to add some muscle when he first stepped on campus- which he is doing. He will need that muscle to help him hold up in SEC play.

So, it's not so much about this year or whether Tyler was better than Tyson Lee. It is about the next four seasons. I'm glad that Dan "got it" because our last two coaches didn't as far as QB's- I could actually probably go further than the last two to be fair. Croom's poor QB managment put us in the situation that we are in, and Dan realized that the way to fix it was to take our lumps with Tyson Lee and Chris Relf. I'll admit- I hated it as much as anyone, but I also knew what Dan was doing, and it will be worth it, and I think our investment will pay off.

Russell was throwing picks and was late with passes early on. He was not ready for the speed of the guys in college football....QB is the hardest position on the field to adjust to coming out of HS...Jefferson at LSU didnt see the field till their 8th or 9th game his Freshman season...Matt Ryan, who was a highly drafted QB didnt play till the 5th game of his Freshman year

See, I would argue that winning 7 games and going to a bowl this year would 1) allow us to RECRUIT BETTER PLAYERS so that Tyler Russell would be surrounded by better players by the time he is a senior. That is how Tyler will have a chance to have a big season down the line; 2) we would not be going into next season with an UNPROVEN INEXPERIENCED QB. Which if we go by some of you guy's argument that inexperience will cost a game or two so now we are back to once again trying to recruit to 5 or 6 wins. Pretty hard to get the talent up so that Tyler can have this magical season you all seem to expect can only happen in his senior year. Mullen made a mistake.

And your assumption is incorrect. Mullen wanted badly to have a winning season in his first year, and he should have achieved that without Tyler. We should have won the LSU and Houston games. Tyler Russell was no where close to being ready to compete at quarterback this season, and Mullen recognized that, as did the rest of the staff. It would have been devastating to Tyler's confidence to have played him this year because he would have embarrassed himself. As it is Tyler has had a full year to get ready for the 2010 season and we get to enjoy him for four years beginning in 2010.

inexperienced RS Freshman QB that led us to our only appearance in the SEC championship game?

Other teams could also say-"Well, you saw how they screwed up Tyler Russell at MSU, that could be you, ya know". That's a pretty big deal since ultimately these players are trying to get to the NFL. You're also assuming that Russell would have won us seven games this year. I still don't buy that. He wasn't ready. I saw him play twice in high school, and while he would do something spectacular on one play, the next play he may do something that would make you scratch your head on the next play. You have to also remember that the SEC is by far the best in the country in terms of defense- both players and coaches. There's a reason why you see very few true freshmen play QB in the SEC. The last one I can remember starting and doing an adequate job- and I'm talking full time, not running a couple of plays like Tebow did- was Peyton Manning, who grew up with a Pro-Bowl QB and is one of the top ten QB's of all time. He also played for Tennessee, which was stocked with a ton of talent. Tyler Russell is no Peyton Manning. We also seem to be recruiting OK depite Mullen's "mistake".

And as far as Russell's inexperience, there is a HUGE difference between coming into camp for 3-4 weeks straight out of high school and RS, going through spring practice, going through another fall practice and then starting. I don't think we will win less games because of Tyler's lack of experience. I think we will win fewer games because he's not as good as Newton. I think he wil have a good season his senior year because of the schedule as much as anything.

So, no Mullen did not make a mistake.

Jackie's offense required a caretaker QB whose job was to simply not make bad plays. Faulty logic and comparison. We will pay for Mullen's mistake next year as well as we paid for it this year. I believe you try to win meaningful games any way you can. We did not do that. Every game we played this year was meaningful since we were not eliminated from bowl eligibility until the Arkansas game (and Ole Miss is always meaningful regardless of record) so this is not like taking the redshirt off a player 10 games into a lost season.

you are accusing Mullen of this. If there's one thing you can not accuse Mullen of, it's that. How many times did we try to do something innovative to win a game? Yep, every time.

Mullen wouldn't do it any differently. I watched quite a few practices this year, and Russell simply wasn't ready. He was never in command of the huddle, and he threw too many picks. Why you can't grasp this concept is beyond me. If playing Russell this year would have meant that we would have gone to a bowl, then Russell would have played. End of story.

"<span class="post-title">He did everything but play a guy who is a better player than Tyson Lee"

We didnt have that player on the team in the first 6 games of the season. Russell was not able to consistently run the offense and make throws due to his not having adjusted to SEC speed. You are talking about probably losing to Vandy had he started due to his limited knowledge of the playbook and the wet conditions limiting the pass. He doesnt pose the run threat that Lee could give us, thus changing how our offense would have been run. It also would have been even tougher for Dixon to get yards earlier in the season as well. I think Russell would have thrown a few more TD's over the course of the season, but he would have thrown at least as many picks, if not more due to his inexperience.</span></p>

<span class="post-title">He simply was not ready to play the first half of the season. And it was best served for us and him to be redshirted.</span></p>

How in the hell can you guarantee that Tyler Russell, who by all accounts struggled against the MSU defense (which is at best mediocre), would've played better than Lee? Matt Barkley was the #1 QB recruit in the country with USC talent around him and he threw 13 interceptions in 11 games. What on the earth makes you think that Russell couldn't possibly throw 14 against arguably the toughest schedule in college football?

we have 5 major guys left on our board:

Damien Robinson
Cameron Newton
Matthew Wells
Vincent Sanders
Carlos Thompson

If we get 3+ out of those guys our class will be solid, if we miss on 3+ our class will be decent. Brunetti is still on the board, but I dont anticipate him switching.

Wells is by all accounts a lock. I think we get Robinson seemingly by default. We seem to be the only one still on him hard. For Newton we're clearly his best option, but I don't think anyone knows how this will play out. Sanders and Thompson seem to be leaning to OM, so hopefully we can close the gaps with official visits.

Either way, I feel this class is at least above average. There seems to be some underrated players in this class that haven't gotten alot of pub, i.e. Carr, Love, Tubby
