I don't see this kid making a rash, unwise decision... he seems pretty smart for a youngster who will carefully weigh his options before deciding...

but...since it's MSU we're talking about, chances are he's gone... it seems that when a star athlete out of high school is weighing pro or us, we seem to always seem to end up on the short end of the stick....

I would like to see us have a Fla State or Bama situation like the article mentions where the kids said no to the money and went to school and played instead...

If a player is wavering between college and the pros, most teams throw in a provision that they'll pay for college when the player is finished with baseball. Of course in Dixon's case, he could get a football scholarship if baseball didn't work out anyway.</p>

Here's what is going to happen- he is going to get drafted lower than he expects and is still going to leave.

It's easy to say the 3rd round is the cutoff right now. But if he's drafted in say the 10th round, it's going to be tough for him to turn that down.

.....that other top prospects have decided to turn down the MLB draft and go to school, but that's not something that normally happens for MSU. We usually do lose these guys, and I don't see Dixon being any different. And frankly, if I were him I'd go pro too. School isn't going anywhere.

if a player makes a public statement like "if i don't get drafted by round __", teams won't even bother to waste a pick on them at all after that point. of course, it all depends on how serious they think he is.

i'm sure the teams that want him know exactly what it would take.

Dixon is in the rare position to have a lot of options open to him. He could go in the draft and come back and play college football if things didn't work out. He could play college football and baseball now and try to get drafted in one of the two sports in 3 years, with the possibility of choosing between the two. He could go in the draft and then just go to college afterwards. It's not an either or scenario like we are so used to seeing.</p>

I don't see a MLB team spending $700K on a 5th or 6th round pick.

Dixon is fully qualified (3.0, 23 ACT)...Outlaw never had a chance. If Travis had the grades it might have been a different story, but the fact that he didn't made it an easy decision to go pro.</p>

In order to play both, you have to leave your baseball team in late July and not return to them until early May. Most people who are serious about trying to get to the big leagues won't want to miss that much time. And most teams who have given a player a large signing bonus won't want them to miss that much time either.

This reminds me more of the Johnathan Bell saga. MSU fans were positive that he was going pro and would never see the field at State. Lo and behold, he not only didnt get drafted in the MLB draft, he also didnt see the field much for football or baseball at MSU.
