Not sure if it needs it's own.

But how does the Heisman contention work?

Earlier in the season I definitely see Corral's name on the list. But now his numbers aren't very impressive, yet his name is still in the top 4.

I'm pretty sure "Heisman contention" is just people giving their opinions about who the "good" players are. There's no formal structure to it, if that's what you're asking (at least I don't think there is).

I don't know anything about Corral's numbers but if he's still being mentioned it's probably because he was mentioned early and people aren't paying too close of attention.

I suspect it says much more about who the alternatives are, than how historically great Corral may be. Vegas has him 4th for what that's worth, with a big dropoff after him.

Odds to win 2021 Heisman Trophy (12/11/21)
Player (School-Position)Odds
Bryce Young (Alabama-QB)+175
CJ Stroud (Ohio State-QB) +225
Kenneth Walker III (Michigan State-RB) +350
Matt Corral (Ole Miss-QB) +700
Kenny Pickett (Pittsburgh-QB) +2500
Sam Hartman (Wake Forest-QB) +3500
TreVeyon Henderson (Ohio State-RB)+4000
Caleb Williams (Oklahoma-QB) +5000
Desmond Ridder (Cincinnati-QB) +5000
Jordan Davis (Georgia-DT) +5000
Will Anderson, Jr. (Alabama-LB) +8000
Brian Robinson (Alabama-RB) +10000
Stetson Bennett (Georgia-QB) +10000
Jameson Williams (Alabama-WR) +10000

Yup. He's fourth but he's not in contention. I just don't think there's anyway he can make a big enough statement against Vandy or MSU to move the needle enough. I guess maybe if the three people ahead of him have awful games in the last two weeks and he puts up huge numbers against us in a nationally televised game it's possible.

This year's Heisman winner is going to be rather forgettable.

But, I think there's a real chance the Heisman comes from the winner of tomorrow's Mich St / Ohio State game.

Yeah it’s a really weak Heisman year, frankly. He put up monster numbers early in the year before he lost all his WRs and got hurt himself. The numbers have dropped a ton since then. But he’s still got good passing and rushing #’s and has only thrown 2 INTs and has over 10 rushing TDs. Plus because of Kiffin he gets more national attention than an Ole Miss QB typically would. Those that pay attention recognize why his stats have dropped some, but not enough pay attention for him to have a shot at winning. Not unless he goes for 800+ with 6 or more TDs between Vandy and the Egg Bowl. If he were to have a monster night in Starkville in a stand-alone national TV game, MAYBE. But that’s a tall task against yalls very good D, good home crowd and the weapons he will have available.

I just hope he gets invited to New York. That would be a big win for Ole Miss. I imagine Will
Rogers will be up there in 2023/24 season.

Does a SEC West QB have to beat Bama to win the Heisman?

Not picking on Corral, but I feel like the national media considers that game to be a referendum
