Give each team 4 permanent opponents and rotate 4 of the other 8. No divisions, no need to take West Virginia or other subpar teams. You play every team twice in a 4 year period, and the top 2 teams, regardless of location, play for the title - fewer title game blowouts like last year.

The west has 7 teams. The east has 6. Everything stays like it is except west teams won't all play each other.

Instead, each west team plays 5 other west teams (instead of 6 other west teams).

I think the only requirement is that a conference must have no less than 12 teams to have a conference championship. I don't think divisions are even required.

Problem comes with interdivisional games. Right now the West teams each play 3 SECE teams, for a total of 18 interdivisional games. You run the math on the east (6 teams by 3 games/team) and you get 18 games, as you must to have a situation that makes sense. Math gets screwed up when SECW goes to 7. Now you get 21 games when you look at the west, but 18 still when you look at the east.

If the East teams are supposed to play 3 games against West division teams, that is only 18 games to divide between 7 teams.

I think we will stay in divisions, but the schedule will be very unbalanced. Not all teams will play the same number of games within the division. It will be a very controversial season, and a 14th team is needed soon.

You also are required to play at least a round robin in each division. That is going to make inter-divisional play quite problematic. I'm thinking Slive and Emmert have already been talking about changing this rule:

<span style="font-weight: bold;"></span>NCAA Bylaw 17.9.5.2

(c) Twelve-Member Conference Championship Game. [FBS/FCS] A
conference championship game between division champions of a member
conference of 12 or more institutions that is divided into two divisions
(of six or more institutions each), each of which conducts round-robin,
regular-season competition among the members of that division;

and that's absolutely wrong.<div>
</div><div>If I'm reading this right, you have your teams on the left most column and their permanent opponents to the right. If that's the case then that's only 3 permanent games instead of 4 which was previously stated.</div>

that helps a bit. Once these conferences go to 16 teams, that bylaw is not going to last. As far as next year though... I'm even more curious as to how things will work...

Mathematically, having unbalanced divisions just won't work. I think we have to leave TAMU out for one season.

The best solution I have heard so far, is to take 4 inter-division matchups and cancel them. That will leave 4 East teams and 4 West teams to play TAMU, and the home team matchups will already be set. For example, if the MSU @ USC game is cancelled, then MSU plays @ TAMU, and TAMU plays @ USC. Just do the same thing with 3 more East-West matchups.

The TAMU games would count in the standings for the division titles, but TAMU would not be in a division and not eligible for the championship game. Their record would count, though, for bowl pecking order.

This will only work for one season.

The NCAA will be dumped!

They may exist, but no longer in the capacity as they are now.

New rules will be made.

I just see the NCAA going the way of the dodo. I don't know if I really like the sound of that or not right now though.

I expressed recently that I was concerned about all of the changes to college sports, and amateur athletics.
Seems like we are losing something with all of this, but heck the train keeps on moving.

The MAC has 13 teams. 7 in the East and 6 in the West. The West plays 5 and 3. In the East Akron and Bowling Green don't play and Buffalo and Kent St. don't play. They play 5 and 3 while the rest of the East plays 6 and 2

Or exceptions made. For example, the SWAC has special permission to do a championship game with only 10 teams. The NCAA would probably allow it if the SEC really pushed it.

I guess my definition of "round robin" and the NCAA's definition are a little different.
