I like Ellis' list better than Veazey's. He lists two guys (O'Connor and Corbin) that KV didn't list who I'm hoping are getting serious looks by Byrne. Here's how I rank his list:

1. Casey
2. O'Connor
3. Corbin
4. Cohen
5. Anderson
6. McDonnell
7. Showalter
8. Smith
9. Raffo
10. Brantley

He's hosted 3 regionals at UVA and hasn't won one yet. But I really wouldn't argue too hard over any of the top 6. I'd be very glad to get any of them.

...I would rather have somebody that consistently hosts regionals than somebody that gets hot every few years and gets to the CWS (a la Polk in 2007). Realistically, 9 times out of 10, you're not going to get to Omaha with the route we took last year. However, if O'Conner keeps hosting every year, he'll break through. Just like Stans will get to the Sweet 16 if he is consistent enough. I would also argue that playing in Starkville is a greater home field advantage than Charlottesville, and we'll be extremely tough to beat in a super, if we can ever get there again, just because of the crowd.

I'm not saying that Showalter won't host every year, but I guess I put more stock in the fact that O'Conner has been stunningly consistent than the fact that he has not been able to get out of a regional yet.

He's young, energetic, and has won consistently at a program not known for baseball. You can say many of the same things about Corbin and Cohen. None have really stood out in the postseason, but you have to remember they are all pretty young, with the oldest being Corbin. The thing is being consistent. We also have to remember that each of these guys coaches at a place with lesser facilities, tradition, and support than we currently offer. Any of those 3 would be an absolute slam dunk.</p>
