IIRC, hr had a really high (insert joke here) YPC in the Fish’s epic ‘72 run. [correction: he had the high avg in 1973]Another PA (Avonworth HS) recruit that Joe missed on.![]()
Eugene attended the same suburban Pittsburgh high School (Avonworth) as me. He graduated five years ahead of me and was in the same class (1965) as my older sister. I remember him attending a few class parties at our house during their high school days. Last time I saw him was at their 50th reunion, to which my longtime girl friend and I were invited. He was a heck of a nice guy. In addition to football he was a pretty good basketball player as well.![]()
Mercury Morris, 2-time SB champ with Fins, dies
Eugene "Mercury" Morris, who starred for the unbeaten 1972 Dolphins and helped the team win two Super Bowl titles, has died at age 77.www.espn.com
EDIT: I just saw that Art already started a thread on this.
Didn't initially catch in Bob's post that you had started a thread. I Know your Joe reference is tongue in cheek, but Eugene's recruitment to West Texas was an interesting side story. The actual facts my be different, but If I recall correctly their staff was watching film of a player with another school (New Brighton?) when they were wowed by a running back from the opposing team (Avonworth). In those days, and for many years after, the Avonworth program was pretty much in the dumps. Anyway, he was offered a scholarship and off he went to begin what was more than just a successful career.Another PA (Avonworth HS) recruit that Joe missed on.![]()

When you mention New Brighton, the name that immediately comes to mind is Po James, another PA recruit that Joe missed, but he was 2-3 years behind Morris.Didn't initially catch in Bob's post that you had started a thread.
