Odd. i am guessing some younger DE s are not stepping up? Not sure I like how this impacts linebacker play.

imguess this will be the first of many decisions I blame on Tom Allen.

He's 6 3 and 250. My guess is that they want to move him around to free him up. The defense's great advantage is they dictate matchups. So if the opposing team has a weak Left or Right Tackle, they can move him over the weakness. And, they can have him drop into coverage while the OLB blitzes. Lots of good options for an outstanding athlete.

So my point is that it may not have anything to do with depth at DE or LBer but how to optimize the best defender we'll have on the field next year.

Move to the highest profile position on the D and get paid.
In the NFL, player salaries vary significantly based on their positions. Let’s delve into the details:
  1. Quarterbacks: It’s no surprise that quarterbacks top the list. The average salary of the top 10 quarterbacks is an impressive $40 million1. In fact, Green Bay Packers’ Aaron Rodgers leads the pack with an annual salary of $50.3 million2.
Wide receiver

  1. Wide Receivers: Wide receivers come in second. This offseason, the market for wideouts saw a significant boost, with players like Davante Adams, Stefon Diggs, and Tyreek Hill securing lucrative extensions1.
Edge rusher

  1. Edge Rushers: These defensive players are currently the highest-paid on that side of the ball. The average salary of the top edge rushers stands at $22 million1.
  2. Offensive Linemen: Teams highly value elite athletes who can dominate the trenches. Offensive linemen, crucial for protecting the quarterback, rank among the highest-paid positions in football.
Defensive tackle

  1. Defensive Tackles: Like offensive linemen, defensive tackles play a pivotal role in controlling the line of scrimmage. They round out the top five highest-paid positions in the NFL1. Interestingly, linebackers, often considered the “quarterbacks of a defense,” find themselves at the bottom of this list. As the NFL Draft approaches, we might witness a run on quarterbacks and wide receivers in the opening round, reaffirming the league’s emphasis on these positions1.
Remember, these figures represent averages, and individual contracts can vary widely. Nonetheless, quarterbacks continue to command the spotlight, both on and off the field! 🏈💰

Big transition going from hand up to hand on the ground. I didn't think he looked particularly adept with pash rushing moves from his LB spot. Just kind of runs in and hits people. Lot of learning to do. Maybe shifting defenses, more of a 5-2 or nickel look in base? LB depth is not great.

This was my guess/take on it as well. Use him like Micah Parsons.

This move makes so much sense and wasn't a big surprise as it has been hinted at for a little while now. The buzz at LB has been about Keys and Rojas, you still have King in the middle. From a size standpoint he's already there with Chop and Adissa and will provide a burst off the edge. Sutton and Carter at DE seems like a good pair on paper.

Actually, I believe it says a lot about the quality and depth at LB, that they can take him and better utilize his size and speed on the edge and in more complex stunts. The reality is that he hasn’t been great in run fits and seemed a step slow in coverage, so this makes great sense.

They also played him in the bowl despite being obviously injured…

The problem is that Allen did not have the decency to consult with the knowledgeable coaches on this board. I for one am offended seeing that I have spent ZERO days of my life on a football field, have never been at a practice, have never watched a game tape. I have learned so much from the coaches on this board, not to mention the hundreds of coaches I sit with in the N end zone stands 7 Saturdays every fall! How dare he!!!

The coaches continue to maKe decisions without consulting the omniscient BWICAC. They act like they know what they are doing. This **** has to stop.

I’ll say it. Tom Allen’s heart is still in Indiana and he is trying to sabotage Penn State.
Yep as a man who is smarter than Tom Allen, I can say that he is overestimating the remainder LB core with the exception of Keys. Yes, one of the three sophs will make an impact, King is serviceable and Keys has upside BUT the pop guns 0 and 43 play too much to beat the Buckeye run game (roadkill) or the Meatchicken O-Line (roadkill) or Oregon's speed (mouthbreathers). Carter is a beast when healthy and perhaps can be a Terrell Suggs with a brain but we have enough depth at DE to justify the move to DE.

One move that could be epic if he can cathc is Flowers' move to WR. I detect our new OC making the call to save that room. Fleming's dog attitude for contested balls is exactly what Flowers needs to learn from him, and Flowers is already faster than him. Again, if Flowers can catch, WR may be serviceable after all and we never say die Lions fans have a reason to be happy. Penn State may score enough points to overcome our screaming "genius" DC.

and PS, what a beast Donkoh is becoming.

Even as a blitzing linebacker, I never recall Abdul Carter getting man vs man physical supremacy against an opposing offensive player

unprotected QB’s don’t count.

Last season, per PFF, he rushed the passer on 35 percent of pass-rush snaps and finished third on the team with 28 total pressures, behind only Isaac and Dani Dennis-Sutton.

Tom Allen has forgotten more about coaching defense than I will ever know. So I will give him the benefit of the doubt. Until we lose a game… then I will tear him a new one!
I assume this is tongue-in-cheek but it sure does describe a lot of the posters on here.

Nice. Where are your seats? My wife and I had season tickets in Row 57 in Section NE from 1978 until 2021 when we gave them up because of her health issues.

He got all his sacks and hits on the Qb by blitzing up the middle, totatally different come off the edge, Hopefully this a ploy to get him the best match up he can get. PSU need him to be a playmaker.

Only 4 1/2 sacks last year. Down from his FR year. Still, think this is a good move - he and Sutton could be tremendous. Allen likes a 4-2-5 anyway - keeps our best D player on the field. He’s goin g to have to work on that first step….
