OU’s year happened back in the BCS daysof 2 teams playing. Going from memory, think the human pollsters actually dropped them to 3rd after CCG, but their SOS was so high compared to the other contenders I think the computers kept them at the top, and the combined ranking kept them as 1 or 2.Yeah, I think it was Herbstreit (??) years ago who started the idea that the loser of a championship game shouldn’t be punished for playing an extra game. (Was it when Oklahoma got rolled like 35-7 in their championship game but still was selected for the BCS game?)
Anyone who’s paid attention over the past few years has seen the committee say they are ranking based on merit but play games with some team’s rankings (with an eye on their future schedule) to get matchups they wanted. The same will happen now.
Yup, Coaches Poll, as contractually required, had LSU as number one. AP gave it to USC.OU’s year happened back in the BCS daysof 2 teams playing. That may have been a split MNC year.

Seeing headlines like, “Conferences, Notre Dame agree to new playoff deal” tells me all I need to know. What carve outs?
Conference champs qualify for the playoffs. Simple and no subjectivity. An
And what would your solution have been?
Maybe. Maybe not. Let’s say a 3 loss NW upsets an undefeated Ohio State for the B1G title. Who gets the spot in the playoff?Conference champs qualify for the playoffs. Simple and no subjectivity.
Conference champs qualify for the playoffs. Simple and no subjectivity.
3 loss NW. Just Like the wildcard in NFL. It's professional football now. Qualifying and winning in the playoffs is what matters. The CCG is part of the playoffs.Maybe. Maybe not. Let’s say a 3 loss NW upsets an undefeated Ohio State for the B1G title. Who gets the spot in the playoff?
I agree. However, the NFL scenerio has playoffs before the conference championship games, so this is slightly different. I’ve just heard Barry rail against the 12 team format so many times without offering any alternative, so that’s why I asked.3 loss NW. Just Like the wildcard in NFL. It's professional football now. Qualifying and winning in the playoffs is what matters. The CCG is part of the playoffs.
I think this is where we are going, not that I like it more than the current system.
I already answered that. Conference champs get in. No subjectivity. Let the conference championships work as the first round of the playoffs. Like all playoffs, sometime the team with the lesser record wins.Maybe. Maybe not. Let’s say a 3 loss NW upsets an undefeated Ohio State for the B1G title. Who gets the spot in the playoff?
True (and I think that it is less than 50-50 that PSU gets into the B10 CCG - though I would not be at all shocked if they did. It is certainly a reasonable possibility)Agreed.
But if we’re 10-2, it’s likely a loss to O$U at home and U$C/UW on the road. In which case, we’re not in the BIG Champ game anyway
Saban brought this point up yesterday when he mentioned the mega conferences where all the teams miss playing almost half the teams. You cold draw a schedule that has none of the top team - his example was Rutgers. He said you cannot have teams like that in the CFP who were not in the CCG with risk of loss but have a record with 2 losses.True (and I think that it is less than 50-50 that PSU gets into the B10 CCG - though I would not be at all shocked if they did. It is certainly a reasonable possibility)
If they do make the B10 CCG, they are in the 12, no doubt (even with a loss there) Same with any other B10 team.
But if they are the "3rd", and have a better record than the 4th, they are also in.
that was Saban's point - if playing these games will create a situation where teams below you in your conference can jump for CFP, no coach will go along with these kinds of games - especially as opening day. Saban's point was schedule matters. He thinks right now that playing these games cannot hurt the loser. That was his Rutgers point.
Uh, Cincy is in the Big 12 and UMass will become a member of the MAC after this year.Seeing headlines like, “Conferences, Notre Dame agree to new playoff deal” tells me all I need to know.
A deeper dive into it….
Playoff Revenue is split between conferences, and independents. B1G and SEC schools get $21M each. ACC and B12 get ~12-13M each. ND gets $12M. Pretty sure the two other Independents, Cincy and UMass don’t get $12M. And, if an Independent makes the playoff, they get another $6M. You think they built that rule for UMass? Instead of just having rules for the conferences, they always have to consider, “and Notre Dame.”
And in defense of my premise of the playoffs only consisting of conference champs, there would be no harm in scheduling tough OOC games since it wouldn’t effect your standing in conference.that was Saban's point - if playing these games will create a situation where teams below you in your conference can jump for CFP, no coach will go along with these kinds of games - especially as opening day. Ok. Sounds good. I’d like the subjectivity out of it also. In addition, ND would have to sh*t or get off the pot. Put their money where their mouth is and join a conference. So, how many conference win winners are you taking?I already answered that. Conference champs get in. No subjectivity. Let the conference championships work as the first round of the playoffs. Like all playoffs, sometime the team with the lesser record wins.
Edit: I see Sleepylion said pretty much the same thing. I’ve been saying this since the playoffs were introduced. Get the subjectivity out of the equation.
These games were probably scheduled years in advance. Also, losing an early season game is far less harmful than late in the year.
To me, just the four main ones that are remaining. Preset a schedule of which conference plays the other and which team is conference hosts. The subjectivity is ridiculous. And I agree on ND. Want in the playoff, get in a conference.Ok. Sounds good. I’d like the subjectivity out of it also. In addition, ND would have to sh*t or get off the pot. Put their money where their mouth is and join a conference. So, how many conference win winners are you taking?
My bad. I mixed up UConn and Cincy. Hard to do I know.Uh, Cincy is in the Big 12 and UMass will become a member of the MAC after this year.
Yes, ND has to be considered because of who they are. If their football history were as execrable as UMass's, they'd get the same consideration as an independent UMass did/does.
UConn, a football program rivaling ZooMass for futility. My bad. I mixed up UConn and Cincy. Hard to do I know.
Same.UConn, a football program rivaling ZooMass for futility.
Try this: swap out Penn State for ND and tell us how you feel.
So it's okay for Rutgers and Vanderbilt to each get $20mm+, but not okay for ND to get $12mm-13mm? Guess the guys who are actually forking over the cash think otherwise.Same.
There is going to be all kinds of jibber like that at the end of the year - and not just wrt "who's in?"... but also "who gets a home game?", and "who gets a bye?"
It is going to be a clown show. A complete clown show - and one of the main reasons why the "12 team" was the worst possible option. The absolute worst possible option.
Though ESPN will love it.... 25 hours a day, for two straight weeks, of their lowest-common-denominator studio geniuses feeding garbage to a receptive audience of college football junkies.
Yes, ND has to be told to suck a bag of d's ... actually, no they don't ... the priests already take care of that.Uh, Cincy is in the Big 12 and UMass will become a member of the MAC after this year.

And ESPN will tell the boys circle jerking at the CFP just how much less they'll pay for a spectacle without ND.Yes, ND has to be told to suck a bag of d's ... actually, no they don't ... the priests already take care of that.
Instead, they need to be told that they're out in the cold until they join a conference.
Not a problem. We'll just set up a gofundme and a gofu**ND to make up the difference between the payouts. And ESPN will tell the boys circle jerking at the CFP just how much less they'll pay for a spectacle without ND.
However it happens, ND still gets paid. Father Dowd and Pete Bevacqua are happy. Not a problem. We'll just set up a gofundme and a gofu**ND to make up the difference between the payouts.
Why have OOC games then? And in defense of my premise of the playoffs only consisting of conference champs, there would be no harm in scheduling tough OOC games since it wouldn’t effect your standing in conference.
I also think that the Saban comments were around the teams who do NOT win their CCG. If you are #2-#4 in a tough conference it may become a factor. Why have OOC games then?
Why would those who have future NFL aspirations play in a game that literally means nothing?
Why would a coach play his better players, and have them potentially get injured, in an OOC game that has no meaning?
Why play at all?Why have OOC games then?

You think you have a good idea and that is the best response you can come up with? Why play at all
If Allar gets hurt they’re out. This exact discussion was taking place on College Football Radio:
Say Penn State is 10-2 at the end of the year and ranked around 8-9; certain shoe-in for an at large birth in the CFP. But, they are headed to the B1G Championship game against say Oregon. Penn State loses, is at 10-3, and falls in the rankings. Do you think they will still get in over say Notre Dame, who has a super weak schedule and no conference championship game to play for? Or another two loss B1G team who didn’t play for the B1G Championship? On the one hand, win and you’re in. On the other, could be out altogether.
You questioned why play all these different games. Why bother playing at all? Why would a conference game mean any more to a guy that has NFL aspirations than a conference game? If the only reason you’re playing is to get to the NFL, then why risk it at all? Put a few games on the highlight reel and bail. It certainly didn’t negatively affect Micah Parsons. You think you have a good idea and that is the best response you can come up with?

At a certain point you play because the games are in the schedule and it should be fun to play and try to win.
