No kidding. It was a crying shame that she, Virginia Madsen, didn’t win the Oscar.

Giamatti robbed too - not even nominated. But Madsen lost to Cate Blanchett whom I like a lot but she was not acting so much as doing a bit in The Aviator.

Fort Apache. I think this is a great, great film. Ford tried hard to show the real West, and his latter films show the effort. The Searchers is better, and shows Ford’s efforts better, but it can be a very hard watch. Fort Apache goes down easier. Fort Apache is also a far better film than Stagecoach, but very few films are as fun as Stagecoach. If I had to choose, right now, to watch either Fort Apache or Stagecoach, I’d pick Stagecoach nine times out of ten.

From The Searchers:

Ethan: What you saw wasn't Lucy.
Brad: But it was, I tell you!
Ethan: What you saw was a buck wearin' Lucy's dress. I found Lucy back in the canyon. Wrapped her in my coat, buried her with my own hands. I thought it best to keep it from ya.
Brad: Did they...? Was she...?
Ethan: What do you want me to do? Draw you a picture? Spell it out? Don't ever ask me! Long as you live, don't ever ask me more.

Also, Now, Voyager. Go ahead and laugh, but I love Now, Voyager.

Also Dodsworth, a wonderful, wonderful film, hits every note perfectly.

A Man For All Seasons ( 6 Academy Awards including Best Actor & Best Picture).
I've been inspired by the brilliance of Paul Schofield as Thomas More more than a dozen times and never tire of it. I've read the book (Play) at least a half-dozen times.
I find no movie more intellectually satisfying.
