About how invasive and undignified the process is (Colin Kaepernick and some others have recently likened it to a slave auction). Many noted other major professional sports do not submit players to this level of scrutiny before a draft. The NFL removed the Wonderlic from its screening process last year - will they change more with growing pressure around the combine process?

It’s worth noting all of this is voluntary and no one is forced to participate in anything.

It's no surprise that Pegula made comments that confused the room, as he was born in the land of confusion, Carbondale Pa. There's something in the water in that town. 🤷‍♂️

Some years ago....the media flocked to Augusta because a women's movement (National Council of Women's Organization's) was demanding the Augusta National admit a female member.....Hootie Johnson, then Chairman, told them to stick it.....and the NFL should follow....if a player feels it is a "slave auction" then they need not attend...

Guess this has been out there for a while amongst some players, but Kaepernick said the following in his Netflix special:

"What they don't want you to understand is what's being established is a power dynamic," Kaepernick, dressed all in black, says.

"Before they put you on the field, teams poke, prod and examine you searching for any defect that might affect your performance," he continues. "No boundary respect. No dignity left intact."

I only mention this because I didn't really hear about the Netflix special but did hear a podcast talking about this today. They also roped in some of the alleged 'collusion' around NFL teams not wanting to sign Lamar Jackson. Will be interesting to see if this builds and at some point players opt out of the combine and/or the NFL decides to change or eliminate parts of it. There is no NBA, MLB, or NHL combine that I know of and the podcast sort of described whatever it is those sports have as more of a 'tryout' - less to do with invasive questions, hand measurements, IQ tests, body fat measurements, etc.

And less than a decade later Augusta had their first female members due to an ultimatum by the governing bodies. Maybe not the argument you thought it was.

Well you know the saying opposites attract......until some time later when you relize you have nothing in common and you are living separate lives.
Alright, now, it's time for Chandler "Eeyore" Pearce to give his Best Man's toast ...

Calling the NFL draft a slave auction or even comping it is sickening.

No.....they invited 2 women on THEIR terms....there was zero effect from any governing body not as Augusta National is NOT a member in the PGA...it is a private tournament. When all the pressure was placed the effert was to get CBS to pull TV coverage....the club said fine, do whatever you want but we are a private organization and will invite a woman on our terms. Because of the fiasco it probably took a decade longer to occur because of the attempts to FORCE the club to bow to outside pressure.

The process is very undignified. It should be private and confidential like medical info.

I didn't know they got rid of the Wonderlic test but thats probably for the best.
And yes it is worth noting that and Kaepernick should take the time to notice it.

Sounds more like wanting to do away with the combine than the draft.

Also, anyone who wants to make a comparison between slavery and a voluntary workout to earn the opportunity for millions of dollars playing a game is not a serious person. Yes, both involved the testing of physical ability, but so does my annual physical. I never think "oh man, it's just like slavery." The common thread is so thin as to be nonexistent. The comparison wasn't made for any real dialogue or consideration, just for shock, and it's part of a much larger problem in society.

This made me chuckle and think, "Yeah, being subjected to a prostate exam is just like slavery!!"

The NBA Draft Combine is a multi-day showcase that takes place every May before the annual June NBA draft. At the combine, college basketball players are measured and take medical tests, are interviewed, perform various athletic tests and shooting drills, and play in five-on-five drills for an audience of National Basketball Association (NBA) coaches, general managers, and scouts. Athletes attend by invitation only. An athlete's performance during the combine can affect perception, draft status, salary, and ultimately the player's career.

The athletic tests include a standing vertical jump, maximum vertical jump, bench press, three-quarter-court sprint time, lane agility time, and modified event time.[1][2] Physical measurements include height with shoes, height without shoes, wingspan, weight, standing reach, body fat, hand length, and hand width.[3] The shooting tests include spot-up three-point field goals from various distances (high school, college, and NBA) depending upon position, shooting off the dribble, and timed jump shots on the move.[4] Although the NBA Draft Combine is the largest pre-draft gathering for testing and drills, international players can attend a separate Eurocamp at a later date.[5] Parts of the combine are televised on ESPNU and ESPN2.[5]

Major League Baseball, in coordination with USA Baseball, announced key details announced that this year’s MLB Draft Combine will be held from June 14-20 at San Diego’s Petco Park. As chosen by USA Baseball and Major League organizations, 300 of the top 2022 Draft prospects will receive invites, along with 50 additional invitees.

The schedule, as announced Wednesday, will work as follows:
June 15-16: Games for high school Combine participants
June 16-17: Strength and performance assessments
June 17-18: Pro-style showcase workouts
There is also a medical evaluation process that players can opt into at the Combine. As laid out in the new collective bargaining agreement, any of the Top 300 prospects who submit to a pre-Draft physical must be offered at least 75 percent of the slot value at their pick. More details, including further activities and the official roster of participants, are coming next week.

Cole Young talks draft combine

Invited players who choose to participate in this year’s Combine won’t just get to show off their skills in front of Draft decision-makers from all 30 clubs. They’ll also get to interact with a Hall of Famer in Trevor Hoffman; several multi-time All-Stars like Torii Hunter, Eric Davis, Mike Cameron, Dante Bichette and Charles Nagy and former managers/execs in Jerry Manuel, Bo Porter, Mike Scioscia and Omar Minaya.
This year’s edition of the Combine also comes with a new wrinkle for fans. The June 17 session is open to the public from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. local time and is free to those with a ticket. Fans can claim up to four tickets at a time. More information can be found at www.padres.com/combine.

For those who can't visit Petco for the showcase, there will be complete coverage and analysis of the event on both MLB Network and MLB.com.
Last year’s first-ever Combine, which took place in North Carolina, featured future No. 1 overall pick Henry Davis alongside fellow Top 100 prospect Ricky Tiedemann and other high picks like Benny Montgomery (eighth overall), Sam Bachman (ninth overall) and Colson Montgomery (22nd overall) among the 167 participants.

you left out a few lines on Lamar NFL teams not want to sign Lamar to a guarenteed contract. Plus give up 2 first rounders (other than the Ravens)
it looks to me all the sports are going to an NFL like combine, see above on NBA and MLB, here are the notels on the NHL sounds like an NFL combine to me.....

According to NHL.com's Mike G. Morreale, the draft combine gives the league's teams "physical and medical assessments of the top prospects" prior to the upcoming draft.

"The NHL combine is the final showcase event before the NHL draft and it's a week full of interviews, medicals and fitness testing where the players get to interact with NHL personnel and the NHL clubs get to learn as much as possible about the future stars of our game," NHL central scouting director Dan Marr said, per Morreale.

Prospects will have 1-on-1 interviews with teams from Monday through Friday. There will be medical exams on Wednesday, and the majority of the fitness tests won't take place until Saturday. Among the tests will be the standing long jump, the bench press, the pro agility test and more.

NHL and AHL strength coaches will serve as the administrators of the fitness tests, which is a change from previous years, according to Morreale

I guess if a player doesn't want to be in the NFL because of this there is the USFL and XFL that could use some good players. How come Colon didn't try out for a position in the USFL and XFL if he really wants the play football again?
