A Samantha Hoopes SI Swimsuit issue tribute would be very appropriate for this board.

I loved sports illustrated for kids growing up. Used to have a page of perforated cards in the middle of each issue.
Wow. I remember that cover. Heavy you read "Calico Joe" by Grisham? It was inspired by Conigliaro and one of Grisham's bestThe first issue I received in my name.

Flag picked up ...Jumped the shark when they put Martha in the swimsuit issue I’ll take the penalty
I have a mint copy of the first issue of SI from 1954, with replicas of 1954 Topps baseball cards inside. It’s not worth as much as you might think because SI sold off many mint copies in 1989, their 35th anniversary. That’s how I got my copy.
On a related note, I also have a mint Life Magazine from 1962 with Post cereal baseball cards of Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris inside as part of an ad. I’ve seen many copies of that magazine missing the cards. Of course, people ripped them out.
Walter Iooss jr. He was excellent. I wanted to be him.I forget the specifics... not like it's not out there. But they were vocal and nasty in an exploitative way, from what I recall.
They did take some good pictures though. The one I used in the Swann thread was also a cover of theirs.

Sports Illustrated is what made me want to be a Photographer. Walter Iooss jr. was a GOAT at it.Growing up in the 80s, I thought that SI had great writers, so good that I would sometimes read, finish, and enjoy an article on golf. That being said, I always thought that The Sporting News did a much better job of actually covering sports. SI was where you went for good stories about sports, TSN was where you went to for actual sports coverage. While I frequently read SI at the library, or bought an occasional issue, I actually had a subscription to The Sporting News from fifth grade (I asked for one for Christmas ‘82) until it stopped printing in 2012. SN’s reporting on their website went downhill quickly and I couldn’t tell you the last time I read anything from it. These days, I enjoy The Athletic, but I do miss the old days of The Sporting News.
I used them as book markers and they were great to clean your teeth if you got something stuck in them.Of course people ripped them out. They ripped them out and put them in the spokes of their bicycles to make noise.

Same here--and I actually got the chance to do so for a few years as a volunteer for PSU minor sports away ca. 2007-2011.Sports Illustrated is what made me want to be a Photographer. Walter Iooss jr. was a GOAT at it.

I didn’t know you were a photographer. I shot for PSU yearbook LaVie 85-86. Shot PSU football and a lot of cheerleaders. Met John Iacono from SI on the football sidelines. Very cool guy.Sports Illustrated is what made me want to be a Photographer. Walter Iooss jr. was a GOAT at it.
Yes, I also think I knew you or we passed each other occasionally . I shot for The Collegian in '83 and then for LaVie in '84 and '85. I liked working for LaVie and it had some good people associated with it. Steve Manuel is a good friend and was a mentor.I didn’t know you were a photographer. I shot for PSU yearbook LaVie 85-86. John Iacono
The Collegian photographers made fun of the LaVie folks saying we had no real deadlines and just liked to take “pretty” pictures. (They may have been right). I did not go by Harvey and not even Harry in that group.Yes, I also think I knew you or we passed each other occasionally . I shot for The Collegian in '83 and then for LaVie in '84 and '85. I have a BFA in Photography from PSU.
Did you ever go by Harvey?
And 40 years later drive hemi-powered SUVs and make fun of electric vehicles.Of course people ripped them out. They ripped them out and put them in the spokes of their bicycles to make noise.
I didn't like the Collegian much for the same reason. I thought they were way more arrogant than they should be so was only there for a semester or so and I remember the Dan guy you mentioned and yes he was arrogant. The Collegian photographers made fun of the LaVie folks saying we had no real deadlines and just liked to take “pretty” pictures. I was mediocre at best but had a blast. I think I got the job because the interviewer seemed to have a crush on me. I remember LaVie guys Joel Gruber, and Terry somebody was a shooter/editor. I remember the name Steve Manuel. I need to pull the yearbook out and look at the photo credit names.
There was a Collegian guy on my dorm floor named Dan something. He was arrogant but very good. I hated him for it.
