Have always heard it’s (New Haven) the best in the U.S. I’m a die hard Ohio Valley-style pizza guy so anxious to how this stacks up. Pepperoni and hot cherry peppers with the house Chianti. Let’s goooo!!!

Generally i love your posts but maybe the worst pizza in the world is from the Ohio Valley.

Hot box Pizza in Library, ( ordered thin and crispy which come out perfect ) is about as good as pizza gets west of Williamsport and east of Portland Oregon. ( edit, also Detroit and Chicago ).

This thread is about to be Lit!

Problem with Ohio Valley is consistency - it’s not the same from place to pace. I grew up on Buzzy’s in Rochester where we would cook the pizza at home. Love the light airy crust and super chopped pepperoni. There is a winery in VA who makes it on property (owner is a Blackhawk HS grad) and it’s amazing. I’m not crazy for DiCarlo’s to be honest.

Quattro Goomba’s Pizza in Aldie, VA

Jealous! Please follow up with a review. I love New Haven style and am dying to get there to sample. You should go bang-bang and hit Sally's and/or Modern.

What have you tried in Portland? Our pizza game sucked when I moved here and is seriously legit now.

This. Live in CT and have had them all - they are all great. It is just a matter of personal preference. Full disclosure, I worked summers at Pepe's back in the day.

My local take out spot, Hot Box must own a million DiCarlos Pizza Boxes. I have to find out the story to this mystery one of these days.

Fantini's in Stuart on US1 - for any SoFlas - is the closest you can come to this. I've had it twice and both times were absolute HR's.

Willie's in Juno Beach is the closest to NY pizza.

Portnoy loves them both.

So, style was familiar - basically high heat with charred edges (similar to wood fired IMO). It was excellent. The pepperoni was crisped and curled - just the right balance of chewy/crunchy. Cherry peppers were hot and good consistency. Sauce and cheese almost perfect too - almost the same in every bite; they don’t skimp on toppings. The best part though was the crust - integrity towards the middle of the pie breaks down in most wood fired/charred pizzas with thinner crust but this held up very well especially with a sauce with a good consistency.

I had mine at the location in Alexandria, VA and it’s the best I’ve had anywhere in NoVA outside of Quattro Goomba’s. Excellent overall IMO.

Dicarlos in Wellsburg WV.
They had a Dicarlos here in Huntington circa 1985 right on Marshall’s campus. I think it was adult son. Anyway they left town I don’t think they could do enough volume here. But I did like his pizza

Willie's pie from the Shell Station. He's a miserable prick, but he makes good pizza. 8.1 from Portnoy.

T-minus 24 hours until I visit Franks for the first time. Sally's on Saturday. Maybe Modern on Sunday if we stay until then. Can't wait.

Anyone have any off the radar New Haven pizza spots to recommend?
