Too bad, such a distraction at what turned out to be a great tournament ( had Charlie won) but what's worse for WM is some marquee players are saying they won't be back. I enjoy good times but that was out of hand, the 16th hole has gone over the top. Time to "clean it up"!!!! Who's the main sponsor??

Who said that they won’t be back?

A lot of the players enjoy the 16th hole. Tell us who the marquee players are that aren't coming back. Other than the Masters this is my favorite tournament.

I do have to say that Phoenix is one of my least favorite tournaments of the year. Between the ignorant crowd, television's continued attempts to make it seem like everything happening at 16 is great, and their strategy to pushing 16 down our throats and show pretty much every golfer playing it while showing so little of 17 which is such a better hole...it all just gets on my nerves. At least this week, we head to Riviera which is my favorite non-major course on tour...and the best hole on tour, the 10th.

It's not the drunkenness itself you saw, but it's all of the booing guys that miss the green or miss puts, players getting pissed at guys yelling in their backswing, etc. The idiots yelling out to try and get on TV is bad enough on normal weeks on tour (and hence why The Masters is the greatest event in golf since you'd never hear it), but it's a whole new level in Phoenix.

And all of my "anti-Phoenix Open" feelings also carry over to the Ryder Cup, and part of why I probably like it less than any other big golf fan that I've ever met (well, that and that it falls during football season, and PSU games/NFL Sundays take precedence over any other sports for me).

I was there on Saturday and called it “The World’s Largest Frat Party.” It’s changed a ton over the years and it reached the tipping point this year.

They really need to do something to clean it up around holes 16-18. The rest of the course was not nearly as bad, but even still, there’s no etiquette. And just overall idiots talking trash to players.

I've read that they are going to start to limit beer sales. I've read that they were selling beer at 7am due to the weather delays and stuff. Is this true?

I wasn’t there that early so I don’t know. They can definitely afford to limit sales. They had beer vendors walking around like they do in stadiums. Some people waited in long lines for drinks/cocktails, but the beer guys were easily accessible. My first actions would be to cut those guys and increase prices even further.

Obli, I was there on Saturday. We got there about 9 AM and they were selling beer at that point. We found a table at a party deck located on the 12th hole (a par three) and spent much of the day there. It was really muddy and had a Woodstock vibe to the entire event.

Alcohol sales stopped around 1 pm as I recall. We were talking to a vendor who indicated that beer sales were stopped due to: 1) a guy running out and doing snow angels in a sand trap on 16; 2) about 30 people who were blacked out drunk (that count was probably low); and 3) people without tickets rushing the entry gate.

We had a good time, but we won't go back for Saturday again. Wednesday and Thursday are our favorite days to go.

Once you got away from the grandstands it was fine. We walked around some of the front nine and it was actually like a normal golf tournament.

To get a feel for some of the madness, check out the ASU Bartsool page on Insta.

This is 2024. The guy could end up a social media millionaire, or even take a serious run at POTUS.

Several of the players commented about the drinking. They are a conservative group so aren't going to publicly call out anyone or the tournament. But you could tell that several of them really like the high energy, white-out-like atmosphere, but that it was getting out of control.

This year was the first time since 2012 that I didn't work that event and I can't say that I missed anything about it. It also feels like there were more incidents and police activity this year than all the years I'd been going combined. The boxscore in the post above illustrates that pretty well. I found the last couple years since the pandemic (2021 was limited crowd and I got to leave early due to contact tracing), it was a lot more civilized and the animals weren't as worked up. I did my best to stay on the front 9 especially after Thursday because trying to drive a cart through that circus just wasn't worth it. This was also the first year that I can remember where they had sizeable weather delays in the middle of play and not just at the beginning of the day due to frost. In fact, the only year I can remember having really crap weather was when Tiger showed up and shanked it around the place. But even then, there weren't any delays that led to mosh pits.
