Happy Pearl Harbor Day with a PSU twist.

On December 7th 1941 my father was finishing his first semester as a senior at PSU. Apparently shortly after the University’s leadership decided that he’d learned enough, and graduated him early so that he and several others could join the Army. I don’t believe there was a foreign studies program back then, but he was allowed to go to Europe and drop bombs.

My uncle Dave, who was scheduled to enter PSU in 1942, instead joined the Marines and was treated to an almost four year tropical vacation in exciting places such as Guadalcanal and Peliu.

Now my uncle Bill while not a Penn Stater (11th grade totally stymied him) was the best. He entered the Army as buck private and was discharged four years later as a buck private. Despite winning a Bronze Star, being awarded a Purple Heart and losing two toes. Now that’s an American success story.

Hopefully today we can spend a moment and remember the sacrifices bye them all the others who fought in WW11.

Thanks for reminding me to go visit an old friend and former neighbor. He is now in an assisted living facility. We used to go to football games together till macular degeneration took away his eye sight.

All around great man.

Great article in the Citizens Voice newspaper today about a soldier who died on the Arizona on Dec 7, 1941. 6 days before his tour would have been finished. Godspeed.
