Thoughts? Paywall, but the gist is you get smaller schools from your state or nearby to play the big boys. Think something like this:

What I do think is when money is involved whatever was good about something will more than likely not be good. Still - could be cool.

I used to enjoy going up for the spring game. James has turned it in to a practice. I’m not interested in watching that. So we just come up to our house and tailgate with friends and family. We’ll go golfing if the weather is good.

What’s wrong with the way things are. The spring game signals the conclusion of a stretch, where hopefully no one got hurt and it’s very quiet. Most of the time your veteran players are on limited reps. If you run a good program you are already getting a lot out of the spring with install, reps for younger players, etc, I doubt you are gaining much from a scrimmage with another program where it would be very conservative, want it very controlled to set up situations, and avoid injury, it would probably be just as boring anyway as all spring games are. Just enjoy the weather and watch your team practice for two hours, it’s still better than baseball.

I need to piggyback on this one, thanks.

You got it. Only a psychopath would want to watch Nick Singleton crash into Abdul Carter and Curtis Jacobs a dozen times full
speed at the conclusion of spring practice for entertainment and risk injury. I certainly don’t need to see Allar against our first team DL with Fashanu not in pads taking it easy, I trust our staff we’ll be ready for WVU and we got the necessary reps in live moments behind the scenes. And I certainly don’t want to take a chance some dope from Temple or wherever, isn’t going to do something stupid in a “scrimmage’ in April. I’m good.

Ok Hugh. Why don't you have YOUR team play other teams full contact and we can watch your brilliance shine. What a dumb ***. Bad hire by Auburn. Can't wait to watch that little ho get curb stomped.

I loved the B&W game but I think there is a bit more to it than "James has turned it into a practice" or at least some pretty good reasons for it.
How many OL did we have last year 4 maybe? When was the last time James ever had a full squad either because of sanctions or injuries or chasing schollies to have a full BW game?
And Joe was never a fan of the game, sure he liked seeing the crowds of people but he would have much preferred a practice scrimmage to the B&W game and made that very clear.
And while I'm in the way back machine we used to get much more valuable info from the Coaches Clinic, a week or so before, than we ever did from the B&W game.
Sorry just think thats fondly remembering the past but not completely accurate.

You’re correct on all points, I wasn’t saying (well at least not intentionally) that Joe liked them. Just that they seemed more like football then practice. I enjoyed seeing the young under class men getting snaps.
So we now use the weekend as a gathering in State College where we have fun. Talk football, and play a round or 2 since none of us care to watch a no contact practice session. While James has had issues to work thru. The NCAA has seriously limited contact in practices even in the fall and season. Which is why tackling across the board is so bad.

I never paid much attention to any other spring games. I'll have to fire up BTN and see what others are doing. I think Michigan had their game last weekend.
I thought though that some other schools were kind of following the same format we did the past few years. 🤷‍♂️

Spot on regarding Coaches Clinic. God, those were pretty neat times.

Well then, I don’t like the idea. I also don’t like the spring games. I’d rather just practice.
