As of right now, there’s really only two routes to a New Year’s Six bowl game for Penn State — Alabama either has to lose to 5-6 Auburn or Tennessee has to lose to 5-6 Vanderbilt, both of which are extremely unlikely.

They predict Citrus vs. Ole Miss.

I hate both OSU and Michigan. No matter who wins, it is probably best for us that it is something like 21-20. That and a lil bit of chaos and maybe both get in CFP and we get the Rose.

Not holding my breath though.

What is our path to NY6? CBS has TCU, Ohio State, USC, and Georgia in the CFP. NY6 Bowls are:

Michigan v. Oregon - Rose
Tennessee v. Cincinnati - Cotton
LSU v. Kansas State - Sugar
Clemson v. Alabama - Orange

If USC gets derailed (they still have Notre Dame and the Pac 12 Championship to play) that might open a spot for the Michigan/OSU loser, which would bump us to Rose I think. Any other scenarios? Would a one loss TCU get in over the UM/OSU loser? I guess we have to pray both OSU and Michigan get to the CFP......

Think I'd rather play Ole Miss in the Citrus than Cincinnati in the Cotton. I want zero to do with UCF, Cincinnati, etc.
Agree. A Citrus Bowl vs SEC is far better than Cotton vs G5. The Cotton Bowl should be removed from the NY6 pool.

I thought that the NY6 was not purely the top ranked after the CFP 4 teams. Wouldn't LSU and Kansas State have 3 losses? how do you take 3 loss teams to NY6. Also, where is UC going to be ranked - does not seem like they would be high enough for Cotton.

scenarios that take us to Rose seem pretty long odds.

Agree with you on USC. I think that if TCU loses, it's out.

Apple cart gets really upset if LSU beats UGa.

Probably won't happen, but I could see UTk fall below PSU in the rankings. That was a bad loss to USCe.

I think it's either Rose or Cotton for NY6, then Citrus which is Jan. 2nd at 1:00 PM. 🤮
Do you have plans for Monday January 2nd that would prevent you from attending or watching?

It’s a public holiday.

The Collegian nowadays isn't big on thoughtful conclusions. I disagree it's extremely unlikely for Vandy to beat UT. Vandy just beat Florida. Hooker is out which could be a morale killer. The game is in Nashville but yes, there will be a ton of Vol fans there. Vandy is +14 but it'll be an interesting game.

They're not. Rose, Sugar, and Orange have contracts with conferences.

Highest ranked G5 champion gets a slot. Since the Cotton has no contract with a conference, that's where it is this year.

Citrus or Orange?

Citrus doesn't have an ACC tie to my knowledge.

Orange is highest ranked Big/SEC/ND vs ACC rep with stipulations that ND can't play more than twice in some # of years and a 3/3 split with Big/SEC.

PSU - Clemson Orange is a possibility

Agree Cotton is a damned if you win damned if you lose bowl.

In the end any bowl is better than no bowl, it's next years PSU team, minus the hold outs.

We’re much better off going to the Citrus than having both of of main competition make the playoffs.

Definitely a bad loss, but not a huge surprise. Tennessee became a trendy media darling. That was evidenced by the Committee making them its #1 team in the initial ranking. That was a joke, as was evidenced the following week in Athens. They should, but probably will not be, ranked below Penn State this week. I'd love to get a shot at them in a bowl game.

I just assume what’s worst for Penn State will happen.
There are "loyal" PSU fans who frequent here and insist that 9-2 or 10-2 is a bitter failure. Yet, we should be going to a NY6 Bowl.
So I guess #1 "We deserve better and in case #2 "We deserve better?"
I hate "we," almost as much as I hate us.

Rest assured of one thing, unlike the SEC, the Big Ten leadership will not lobby for PSU to go to a Big 6 bowl
Normally I would agree, but in this case it would mean a lot more money for conference coffers if PSU gets NY6 slot and 3 BIG teams in the NY6/CFP field. So, maybe they do some lobbying, but if it comes down to PSU/UT then I think the Hooker situation will definintly be taken into account, plus PSU only 2 losses are to teams in the top 10 while UT and LSU has muh worse losses, I mean 63 points ot USCe should be an automatic disqualifier.

A "lot more money?" How do you figure that?

I don't think "a lot more money"....is the key here....

The outcome of the CCGs will play a big role (an upset of the B10W team winning the B10 CCG, or TCU/USC/maybe even Clemson losing their CCG would throw some monkeys in the wrench, for sure), but the idea that PSU - at this point - is anything but an odds-on favorite to get a NY6 spot is just silly. IMO.

Assume all favorites win out (OSU, Georgia, TCU, USC, Clemson) - think the bowls look like this:

CFP (Peach, Fiesta) - Georgia, TCU, USC, OSU.

Rose Bowl - Michigan v. Oregon

Cotton Bowl - Cincinnati/Tulane/UCF v. At Large (Penn State, Bama, Tennessee, LSU?)

Orange Bowl - Clemson vs. B1G (Penn State) or SEC (LSU, Bama, Tennessee?)

Sugar Bowl - Kansas State vs. SEC (LSU, Bama, Tennessee?)

A three loss LSU may be completely out, but they'd technically be the SEC #2 (right?). Have to hope that Penn State is more attractive than SEC teams like Tennessee and Bama. LSU winning the SEC championship is maybe the worst thing that could happen for Penn State. Georgia still probably gets a CFP slot and LSU gets in the NY6. USC losing opens the door for the UM/OSU loser to maybe get to the CFP. Should be fun to watch....

I think thats a pretty good analysis.

I think the most likely to "flip" would be USC losing another game (either ND or their CCG) which could very well place PSU in the Rose (with UM - OSU loser getting into the CFP)

Other than that, its a matter of PSU being ahead of two of the three SEC teams (Bama, LSU, Tenn). I think PSU would be more attractive than a three-loss LSU, and probably UT - but probably not Bama. Which would get PSU into one of the other NY6 games.

So..... root for ND this weekend :)

Tennessee to NY6?? Their QB’s done for the year and they just got SMOKED. Can’t believe they’d get picked ahead of PSU. They won one big game this year
