Nice one Jay:
But on that last Sunday afternoon as I drove the lots one last time, I was reminded of the great final passage from Fitzgerald’s classic: “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”

I don’t get how Gatsby and football are related. Sorry - I’m against the over-dramatization of sports; and in this instance, we’re comparing the last home football game of the season to the inability to recapture the past and alter the future simultaneously. Settle down Jay.

If it’s anyone other than Jay, or Franklin, writing it, it isn’t questioned.

Some guys just can’t win. ( o_O )

Jay needs to carve out his own niche in life without trying to make everything "football-related". Others who have had celebrity parents have broken out of the mold and forged their own accomplishments to make a name for themselves such as Bear Bryant's son, Paul Bryant Jr. who became a world class businessman and financier, though he has his detractors on how he ran the Alabama Board of Trustees when he was Chairman.

I was never a big fan of Jay as a coach, but I do think he is a talented writer. This piece hits home pretty hard for me. When he touches on some of us may not see next season, I am hit with the reality that a close friend of mine was taken from us way too soon and unexpectedly last year around the holidays. We tailgated together last year for the Northwestern game in the pouring rain and he was such a diehard and wanted to get into the stadium early despite the rain. The rest of us stayed behind and chuckled that he had to be the first one in the stadium. I can still see him walking away from us in his poncho to get to his seat that day. It was the last tailgate I would enjoy with him. There’s a big void for me that hit especially hard during the season and on game days. Tomorrow’s not guaranteed for any of us. Enjoy family and friends whenever possible. Life’s too short not to.

I don't have a problem with Jay (other than the fact that he apparently doesn't have a job), but his writing (not the style so much, rather the topics) reminds me of my having to write a short story when I was in 7th grade. My imagination was limited to 7th and 8th grade basketball, because that was the center of my universe at the time - so that's what I wrote about.

I got a C, and deserved it.

The problem Jay will always have is , someone else has the job his mom promised him , and it bothers him of course . When you are not able to have the position that was promised to you it can bother you .

Not true - would say the same for anyone. To me, it's lazy writing - Gatsby's final line is one of the most famous of all time - for a reason; and it's not to recapture the loss of playing a final home football game. Sue me.

Jays a little old to start a new career, he caught way too much s**t simply because of his last name.

Huh? Jay was 42 when he lost his job. He couldn’t find something else rather than living off psu money and his dads name? Many people started great careers after 42.

Why did he need to start a new career, because you think he should? He can do whatever the hell he wants.
