firing Nutt this year would be a huge mistake

Imagine if these super conferences fall in place real quick early next year. That would put a lot of great coaches in unaligned programs like TCU, Boise, etc. UM would be much better off picking up one of those coaches looking to make the jump. If they pull the trigger on Nutt before the realignment they will be fighting over the Joker Phillips of the world.

They aren't getting Patterson or Petersen regardless of when they fire Nutt. But don't be stupid in saying that all they'd end up with is Joker Phillips. They could go the exact route we did and get a hot assistant or they'll go for a Leach or Rich Rod type, somebody that's not Urban Meyer but is looking to get back into the game.

UM has gone to coaching mary-go-round for a while. That doesn't inspire confidence for potential new hires. That and the fact that the fan base can't seem to name one viable candidate for the job. If we end up with 4 big super conferences then those ~80 schools will have their pick of the 120 coaches and assistants. I would like my chances after realignment rather than before.

that's just NOT going to happen. The major conferences have never had the same number of teams. Getting everyone to 16 would require a level of cooperation between the conferences that's never been seen. If you look at what each conference has done in the last few years with realignment, one thing is clear. Each conference is looking out for itself and doesn't give a 17 about the other conferences, with the one exception being the SEC not destroying the Big 12 by taking Missouri. But the SEC didn't pass Missouri over because of any desire to help the Big 12. They did it to keep the PAC-12 from becoming the richest conference in the country.

The only way I see that happening is if the Big 12 ends up being raided, and they still may be at some point, and a few more teams from the Big East get raided.

Then, I could see a scenario where the 4 remaining strong conferences (Pac 12, SEC, Big 10, ACC) form an alliance and break off to form their own division of college football, and they make it a requirement to have 16 teams with some sort of conference playoff format prior to a national playoff.

It would take some cooperation, correct, but I think if the money were right and the Big 12 and Big East were weak enough, you could see that cooperation take place.

The money associated with a playoff would be huge, and seceding from the NCAA could mean those schools keep a lot more of it.

I just don't know how it would work out though. The Pac-12 obviously made overtures about Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and OSU. If they did that, they'd be at 16. The SEC has A&M. Would we go for Missouri next? If we needed to add two more, where would we go for those? If we're in theoretical collusion with the ACC, we aren't stealing UNC or Va. Tech. We'd have to go for West Virginia or someone like Louisville or Cincinnati.

The ACC is at 14 now, who else would they add? Rutgers and Syracuse were rumored to be making a push for joining their league. If those two, who does the Big 10 get? Would it finally be able to force Notre Dame to join in this hypothetical? Then do they go after UConn? That's the issue. Even if you had cooperation and asked each league to get to 16, you'd have a battle over those remaining pieces. The Big 10 and SEC would probably both want Mizzou. The Big 10 and ACC both would probably go after Syracuse. The SEC might cave and go after Oklahoma and OSU and fight the Pac 12 for them.

mentioned. some "out there" like urban, but the landscape is full of good coaches at lower level conferences who would love to come to the sec, plus a number of assistants who look like they are ready. IF we fire nutt we'll pony up the $$. as far as the "mary" go round. most coaches figure in 4 yrs they ought to be able to show they are at least on the right track. firing a guy after 2 yrs might give some pause but 4 yrs is enough. just like top recruits ain't sceered of the talent ahead of them at say bama, a confident solid coach ain't sceered of getting fired.
