Brought in Jared Benko, who did a lot of good things.
Hump Renovation.
Prioritized a lot of the small sports.
He also quickly got rid of the bad hires that he made.
Not to mention, if Cohen was still around now, I'm pretty sure he'd have been involved with the baseball program, and prevented some of the culture loss we're seeing now.
The biggest problem with Cohen is that he had ideas to try and mitigate our lack of funding as compared to our peers, and many of our alumni didn't like that, they weren't used to that. In this way, he was not like LT, which so many try to claim. LT hired Croom for cheap (and for the politics), Cohen went and ponied up for Leach (for the niche passing offense). Our fans and alumni were ignorant (as in, not knowing and/or understanding), so they just wanted to try and continue to pull up the rear of the SEC and try to do the same things Alabama was doing.
In all of their minds, you have to kiss their arse in order to get them to donate money. Total BS. It's the opposite over at Auburn, where they willingly give, but they need an AD to keep them in their place and organize them. So, while it sucks that our folks are so cheap, it's probably best that he is at Auburn, for his own career, especially with Benko gone, who was a good fundraiser.
So we have to bring in Selmon now, to kiss errrrrbody's ***, so our cigar boys feel special. And things continue to stay the same, which is how most MSU people want them.
It's rare that you get a Byrne, who is basically good at both ends of it, kissing ***/fundraising AND organizing/hiring coaches. Selmon is another Stricklin.

He gave his most successful head coach an ultimatum to either fire his own daughter, or GTFO.
Then went to Auburn and hired Hugh Freeze.

Those alumni hired Cohen. They were idiots too and some of them still are problems for State.
Wooo LOL, Cohen didn't hire Jans, the basketball boosters handled that to keep him away from it. Leach destroyed our recruiting. Lemonis got handed a top team and dismantled the program once they were gone. Ricketts was hired because of the late nature of what happened and we couldn't hire anyone else really.

So to debunk one lie, Cohen did not hire Benko. Jared was on staff for several months before Cohen was named AD.
If you want to credit him for a few solid hires that’s fine, but it’s negated by just as many terrible hires he made. The fact that he “got rid of them quick” doesn’t change the fact that the guy made multiple poor hires and some others that are clearly a mixed bag in hindsight (Lemonis). The New York Giants may have saved his career by hiring Joe Judge away from us before Cohen gave him a chance to destroy our football program.
The Hump renovation was a source of contention for much of how it was handled.
He openly trashed NIL at basically every speaking engagement and then tried to blame our poor NIL situation that he contributed to in a major way for his departure.
He hired or allowed the hire of a cheer coach as one of his marketing leads. And our marketing in general dropped off tremendously under his watch.
He treated men’s basketball like a third world country his entire tenure and forced us to play home postseason games on the road due to “construction” when we weren’t due to start Hump construction for another month or two.
The guy was a bad AD. I have no idea what Auburn saw in him and I don’t think he’s terribly popular with their fans either.
They saw a useful idiot for when they need a fall guy for Freezus' next scandal. Jimmy Rane may call the shots, but he ain't taking the fall.
One other thing - he also knew that baseball was our ticket to success and that it was a good recruiting tool.

No college athletic director has ever been fired because he let the women’s basketball program go to hell, but they can damn sure get fired for sweeping a coach/player affair under the rug.
Worst case scenario isn’t women’s basketball sucking. Worst case scenario is that the affair goes south, word gets out, and the school gets hit with Title IX violations.

I think you’re splitting hairs. She was on the sideline for every game and in every huddle. Don’t act like she wasn’t part of the coaching staff when you know damn well she was. You can say you don’t think it’s a big deal, but at least be intellectually honest with yourself.

A Title IX attorney seeking out a 7 or 8-figure settlement against MSU for gross negligence in managing their legal obligation for protecting student athletes would make it real 17ing clear that it doesn’t matter what the salary or official title is of the coach in question. It’s still someone in a position of power over the player….and in this case there would be no way imaginable that it could be argued otherwise because she’s not only a coach on the staff, but the daughter of the 17ing head coach. Slam 17ing dunk massive settlement for any attorney out there that passed the bar….and that’s a phrase you don’t get to use very often in women’s basketball very often.
And aGAIN, if everything happened as alleged, Vic was a massive idiot and very possibly a narcissist to hire his own daughter to that position in the first place. No other coach in the country would have made that same hire for that same position except him. Blatant nepotism and selfishness at its finest…but he knew he could get away with it based on his record, and he did.
Regardless of how well it works out for him or MSU in the end, and no matter how it went down, it’s nobody’s fault except Vic Schaefer that Vic Schaefer is no longer at MSU. Period.

Cohen is a POS for many many reasons but making decisions about the Auburn football program will never be one of them. First of all he will never ever make a meaningful decision about Auburn football. Second the Auburn football program was a sleezey POS before Cohen got there and will be long after he leaves.

Vic brought her in because she didn't pan out as an espn commentator. Yes it's nepotism, but I'm sure if she is worthy as a coach, she'd leave the nest finally to go her own way.
