Another example of one of the threads that was almost as melodramatic as an episode of Days of Our Lives. We have some people who potentially would be good writers for that show
Hired Lemonis, who won us first national title. Please enlighten us on what exactly this guy accomplished, other than his contributions as a baseball recruiter/program builder from when he was a coach.
We demand direct evidence!Until I see pics or vids of rumored violations, they didn't exist.
How has nobody filed an FOIA or ORA request about this yet?We demand direct evidence!
I wouldn’t go that far. Have you seen a picture of that animal? Cohen must singlehandedly keep paper bag companies in business. The hard-on some folks on this board have for a former AD's wife is bizarre.
He gave his most successful head coach an ultimatum to either fire his own daughter, or GTFO.What should Cohen have done differently?
Cohen didn't hire Freeze.....
I don’t think you’re understanding what he’s implying. How John Cohen handled backlash to hiring Hugh Freeze as Auburn football coach
Here's a look inside the way Auburn handled fan concern about hiring Hugh Freezewww.al.com
It was his first hire, only days after taking the position.
Ahhhh, yes. Touché. My apologies to @AROB44….I don’t think you’re understanding what he’s implying.
Those alumni hired Cohen. They were idiots too and some of them still are problems for State.Fake news. This is just another way of saying he didn't kiss alumni's ***.
Amazing to me how you sheep just grab ahold of a hivemind viewpoint and run with it as fact.
Wooo LOL, Cohen didn't hire Jans, the basketball boosters handled that to keep him away from it. Leach destroyed our recruiting. Lemonis got handed a top team and dismantled the program once they were gone. Ricketts was hired because of the late nature of what happened and we couldn't hire anyone else really.Hired Lemonis, who won us first national title.
Hired Jans.
Hired Leach.
Hired Dennis.
Hired Ricketts.
Brought in Jared Benko, who did a lot of good things.
Hump Renovation.
Prioritized a lot of the small sports.
He also quickly got rid of the bad hires that he made.
Not to mention, if Cohen was still around now, I'm pretty sure he'd have been involved with the baseball program, and prevented some of the culture loss we're seeing now.
The biggest problem with Cohen is that he had ideas to try and mitigate our lack of funding as compared to our peers, and many of our alumni didn't like that, they weren't used to that. In this way, he was not like LT, which so many try to claim. LT hired Croom for cheap (and for the politics), Cohen went and ponied up for Leach (for the niche passing offense). Our fans and alumni were ignorant (as in, not knowing and/or understanding), so they just wanted to try and continue to pull up the rear of the SEC and try to do the same things Alabama was doing.
In all of their minds, you have to kiss their arse in order to get them to donate money. Total BS. It's the opposite over at Auburn, where they willingly give, but they need an AD to keep them in their place and organize them. So, while it sucks that our folks are so cheap, it's probably best that he is at Auburn, for his own career, especially with Benko gone, who was a good fundraiser.
So we have to bring in Selmon now, to kiss errrrrbody's ***, so our cigar boys feel special. And things continue to stay the same, which is how most MSU people want them.
It's rare that you get a Byrne, who is basically good at both ends of it, kissing ***/fundraising AND organizing/hiring coaches. Selmon is another Stricklin.
So to debunk one lie, Cohen did not hire Benko. Jared was on staff for several months before Cohen was named AD.Hired Lemonis, who won us first national title.
Hired Jans.
Hired Leach.
Hired Dennis.
Hired Ricketts.
Brought in Jared Benko, who did a lot of good things.

And ?!?!in four seasons, he's only had one player drafted in the WNBA, Charli Collier, in 2021, and she wasn't really his recruit.
“Leach destroyed our recruiting”Wooo LOL, Cohen didn't hire Jans, the basketball boosters handled that to keep him away from it. Leach destroyed our recruiting. Lemonis got handed a top team and dismantled the program once they were gone. Ricketts was hired because of the late nature of what happened and we couldn't hire anyone else really.
Benko? LOL
Hump reno instead of building a real arena.
Prioritizing small club sports is stupid as hell. He ignored NIL because of it.
Damn, you really have no clue or are just trolling out your ***. Probably both.
They saw a useful idiot for when they need a fall guy for Freezus' next scandal. Jimmy Rane may call the shots, but he ain't taking the fall. The guy was a bad AD. I have no idea what Auburn saw in him
One other thing - he also knew that baseball was our ticket to success and that it was a good recruiting tool.So to debunk one lie, Cohen did not hire Benko. Jared was on staff for several months before Cohen was named AD.
If you want to credit him for a few solid hires that’s fine, but it’s negated by just as many terrible hires he made. The fact that he “got rid of them quick” doesn’t change the fact that the guy made multiple poor hires and some others that are clearly a mixed bag in hindsight (Lemonis). The New York Giants may have saved his career by hiring Joe Judge away from us before Cohen gave him a chance to destroy our football program.
The Hump renovation was a source of contention for much of how it was handled.
He openly trashed NIL at basically every speaking engagement and then tried to blame our poor NIL situation that he contributed to in a major way for his departure.
He hired or allowed the hire of a cheer coach as one of his marketing leads. And our marketing in general dropped off tremendously under his watch.
He treated men’s basketball like a third world country his entire tenure and forced us to play home postseason games on the road due to “construction” when we weren’t due to start Hump construction for another month or two.
The guy was a bad AD. I have no idea what Auburn saw in him and I don’t think he’s terribly popular with their fans either.
To keep Vic at Mississippi State? Or, to keep any coach of any sport that had been to two consecutive national championship games at Mississippi State? It was a grad assistant and they played together and had this going on the whole time. It was silly and could've been worked out.
No college athletic director has ever been fired because he let the women’s basketball program go to hell, but they can damn sure get fired for sweeping a coach/player affair under the rug.He gave his most successful head coach an ultimatum to either fire his own daughter, or GTFO.
Then went to Auburn and hired Hugh Freeze.
Not a consistent person, by any measure. Unless you just count the crazy…
ETA: Blair was the problem and Vic should’ve been aware. Worst case scenario, though, and WBB gets in big trouble and we are basically where we are right now…. Sucking.
I think you’re splitting hairs. She was on the sideline for every game and in every huddle. Don’t act like she wasn’t part of the coaching staff when you know damn well she was. You can say you don’t think it’s a big deal, but at least be intellectually honest with yourself. She assists with various day-to-day operations of the program off the court, including coordinating community service events for the team and acting as a liaison with academics and housing.
Wasn't even a coach.....it was a ridiculously poorly handled situation that could've been worked out. Cohen was garbage from day one.
This and how long it took to put money in the Hump..What if Cohen started the rumors? Do you think Texas would have hired Vic and the assistant if the rumors were true? If I am not mistaken, the real reason Vic left is because him and Cohen disagreed on how much $$ WBB was getting compared to baseball.
If u only knew what was told to weak *** Keenum. My question, where was Keenum in all this? He should have stepped in and told Cohen that Vic was hands off. It's not unusual for a coach to be more important than the AD. Although Vic was only the coach of our 4th program, he is likely the best coach we've had of the big 4. He was building a dynasty in Starkville that would have eventually rivaled USEe and UConn. Cohen was a below average AD, and should have been shown the door before Vic. I'd wager the Barn won't tolerate him meddling in any successful sports. The two most important duties of an AD, raise money and be the fall guy.
Damn, I bet big red would be leave you in a puddle of sweat and go outside and work on her jump shot.I wanted details!
Like.... so
so so
so many details.
I thought 615 had them, but nah, it’s just some bullsнit about Nelle Cohen.
Anyways… so this thread isn’t a total loss.

Yes, please.Damn, I bet big red would be leave you in a puddle of sweat and go outside and work on her jump shot.
Exactly. A Title IX attorney seeking out a 7 or 8-figure settlement against MSU for gross negligence in managing their legal obligation for protecting student athletes would make it real 17ing clear that it doesn’t matter what the salary or official title is of the coach in question. It’s still someone in a position of power over the player….and in this case there would be no way imaginable that it could be argued otherwise because she’s not only a coach on the staff, but the daughter of the 17ing head coach. Slam 17ing dunk massive settlement for any attorney out there that passed the bar….and that’s a phrase you don’t get to use very often in women’s basketball very often.I think you’re splitting hairs. She was on the sideline for every game and in every huddle. Don’t act like she wasn’t part of the coaching staff when you know damn well she was. Exactly. More than likely, nothing ever happens. But that situation put us at very real risk of major liability if it blew up. And those situations are always at risk of blowing up.Exactly. And aGAIN, if everything happened as alleged, Vic was a massive idiot and very possibly a narcissist to hire his own daughter to that position in the first place. No other coach in the country would have made that same hire for that same position except him. Blatant nepotism and selfishness at its finest…but he knew he could get away with it based on his record, and he did.
Regardless of how well it works out for him or MSU in the end, and no matter how it went down, it’s nobody’s fault except Vic Schaefer that Vic Schaefer is no longer at MSU. Period.
Vic brought her in because she didn't pan out as an espn commentator. Yes it's nepotism, but I'm sure if she is worthy as a coach, she'd leave the nest finally to go her own way.Exactly. It’s true“Leach destroyed our recruiting”
Hahahahhaa
Now you’re just being a complete idiotOne other thing - he also knew that baseball was our ticket to success and that it was a good recruiting tool.
SEC gonna pay the bills.
Go look at the current roster and get back with me.
LolGo look at the current roster and get back with me.
QB = Lebby transfer from portal
RB = same
WR = 2/3 are the same as above. May end up being all 3 if we can recruit over Mosley.
OL = 3/5 are portal adds by Lebby
TE = no one signed by Leach’s staff
Defense? Hoo boy. Did they recruit like complete dogsh** over there.
We weren’t going anywhere under Leach because they couldn’t recruit to save their lives.
