Sad news. Only 35.

Not sure if he was on the Gulf Coast, but read prior to seeing this that 11 people have drowned in Florida and Alabama in the last two weeks alone. It's shocking. Pay attention to those flags on the beach! They aren't there for decoration.

At the agency where I work, a lady in another division and her daughter drowned in a capsized pontoon boat accident just recently in Florida.

Years ago, I got caught in something off the coast of JAX. I was in mid-chest deep water and strong currents were pulling me out. I got on top and swam like crazy and got to shore. Lots of people drowned in CHS beaches, especially Folly because of those currents.

Rip currents are being blamed for the drownings, in addition to people ignoring DOUBLE Red Flags.

A rip tide almost got me at nags head back in 2010. Knew what was happening and swam parallel with it until I got out of it almost a mile down the beach(a guy from Pennsylvania swimming at that same beach that day did drown).

8 of 9 deaths in Fl were in areas with double red flags. What isn't in the news are the overwhelming number of water rescues that have
taken place in those areas. Last I saw there were over 40. Responders have been overrun with rescue calls in the panhandle.

None of this would have happened if swimmers didn't ignore the warnings.

If people had a minimum of common sense, they would avoid the beach with 1 red flag warning, and be extremely cautious with a yellow flag.
I grew up in a beach town, and even when we were young and in peak physical condition, we rarely went in at yellow flag warnings.
Having to deal with severe undertows all day does not make a fun day at the beach.

Terrible news. Sad this had to happen for people to take notice of the dangers out there. It wasn’t long ago since forever Razorback Peyton Hillis almost drowned saving his kid.

I had forgotten about Hillis - that was on the Gulf Coast as well (Pensacola). I’ve been to several places down there where there were hardly any waves (Mexico Beach), is there always huge surf as you head down the panhandle toward Alabama?

My mom did the same thing for me when I was about 5. Got swept out in a current right next to ocean isle pier. Probably less than 3/4s of the way out and this woman Swam out in it to get me. Still have the pic of after.

I was in Garden City in the ocean with 2 of my kids. We were playing and having a good time. I heard this crying coming from behind me (I was facing the shore). I turn around and this kid that was probably 6 was on a boogie board probably 30 feet behind me getting drug out. No life jacket, no swimmies....just a boogie board. I told my kids to head in, and had to go out to get the boy. I drug him back to the shore and we went down the beach looking for his mom. We found her. She didn't even know he was missing and acted like a total jerk about it. I figured she would want to know why a random man was bringing her child to her, so I explained what happened. She just said "OK" and turned around.

I think part of it is people go on vacation and just decide they're going to do whatever the F they want. They don't care what the flag says, they're not wasting their vaca. You see it all the time with parents getting hammered on the beach with little kids running around. Boggles my mind.

No, but there are strong currents/rip currents/undertow, etc...

Black Bike week and golf carts are the same way. They don't read, know or heed the rules.

A 26 yr old female drown at Edisto about a month ago right at our normal beach access.Somebody saw her floating in knee deep water near a groin.People there say no rip current as it was at low tide.Still haven't heard what they think happened.

I think first we have to figure out whose groin it was.
