I saw it mentioned here that Keenum was on the list for Ag Sec. Yeah. That’s not going to happen. Massie from Kentucky looks to be a choice.

So. We keep Keenum.

Hope that isn't the case. Massie is way more valuable in the House than as Ag Secretary. You've got a Democrat Kentucky Gov who would most certainly appoint a Democrat to the vacant seat
As close as the House is going to be they won't pull anyone from there unless the replacement is all but guaranteed to be a Republican.

The D's will never be able to avoid running that Newsom in 28
Concur, he's the Trump of the left. Charismatic, tons of self confidence, great speaker, looks good in a suit and will crush anyone in a debate. Him going toe-to-toe with Trump on a debate stage would be awesome.

Plus he'll do every podcast, show, etc., and show on fear.

The fact that his past results are terrible, will have no impact.

Newsom's biggest challenge will be explaining away the issues that California has at the moment. Republicans have made that state the centerpiece of their resistance to Democrat policy.

Trying to run Newsom and make him a 'regular guy' is going to flame out spectacularly. They should TOTALLY do it.

Speaking of Kentucky governor. I think Dems run Andy Beshear in 2028.

He is already targeting Stefanik in a democratic run state. He is already getting bad advice. The house is going to be 218-217 at best if he pulls House Reps from Dem Run States do Cabinet positions.

Yeah, I'm sure a 78 year old billionaire who's been elected POTUS twice isn't considering all this. He's such a novice in the matters.

As someone who takes a ton of pride in being an independent, what is happening right now is an abomination to what American government is supposed to be. One party should never have absolute power, I don’t care how much you agree with them. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I place the blame for this squarely at the feet of the Democratic Party. It is unbelievable how badly they have botched recent political history. I am hoping this is their come to Jesus moment, but I doubt it.

I just assumed the USDA would be axed.

- He promised to eliminate the Department of Education.
- He promised to eliminate federal income taxes and severely reduce IRS staff.
- He said he is going to gut EPA.
- His potential Secretary of HHS, which oversees the FDA, said entire departments within FDA need to go.
- His presumptive 'Head of the Department of Government Efficiency' recently said at least $2 TRILLION will be cut from Federal spending.

So yeah, I just figured the USDA would be axed or gutted and whats left would be rolled into another Department somehow. Cant see how that much could be cut otherwise.

They'll over analyze why they lost this group or that and not accept the fact that swing voters wanted a controlled border and cheaper gas/eggs. If those things don't change, especially the cost of living part, maga will get the boot too. It's the economy, stupid.

But yes, agree when the absolute power thing. I'm afraid we are going to get an Andrew Jackson "make me" moment the next time SCOTUS tells Trump he can't doing something. This congress won't impeach him if he ignores courts. So the only thing left would be elections in 26 and 28. If the voters were good with it, then we've basically said we are fine with a guy that wants to play King and a congress that doesn't want to act as a check to that. If that's what we want, I guess that's what we get.

What is 'recent political history' to you?

- More people voted for the Democratic candidate compared to the Republican candidate in 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020.
- Democrats won control of the House in 2018 and had a net +41 seat change.
- Democrats picked up a Gubernatorial net seat change of +7 in 2018.
- Democrats picked up 3 seats in the Senate in 2020 and maintained control.
- Democrats picked up 1 more Senate seat in 2022 and maintained control.
- Democrats were +2 in Gubernatorial net seat change in 2022.

Keep in mind that basically every incumbent party leader across the developed democratic world, regardless of political affiliation, has lost in recent elections and the same few reasons are consistently mentioned.

Democrats didnt do well last week and there are plenty of hot takes to explain why, and there will be actual well founded analysis in coming months.
I just dont think its accurate to say they have botched recent political history. More people voted for Democrats than Republicans for president in the 4 out of the last 5 elections. Seems tough to say the party should do better than that.
A lot of really tough lessons need to be learned and the party will need to figure out what it wants its unified voice to be because right now its pretty mixed.
Also, I am unsure how a party counters a candidate that is so beloved.

That is not how it works. The governor only appoints replacements to the Senate. If Massie is selected, there will be a special election for his replacement.

Maybe Covid will be far enough in the past then that it won’t matter, but I think shutting down regular, not politically connected businesses while exempting the film industry and then having a $400 a head dinner at French laundry with lobbyists will pit off a lot of moderates. Lots of people can’t stand politicians wrecking other people’s lives with rules they won’t follow personally.

if they have a real primary, I think it may make him non competitive for the nomination.

Are you high? Slick Newsome and Ron DeSantis debated last year and it wasn‘t pretty for the Slickster. And Slick doesn’t have to go against Trump. He will have to go against JD Vance, which will be an even tougher draw.

Except DeSantis

I think Desantis did two things wrong.

1. He was never going to beat Trump. It was hubris by him to think he could. He should have bided his time and waited until the next election

2. He tried to BE Trump. The only person that can pull off Trump is Trump. Everybody else who tries ends up looking dumb.

I think he probably wasted his chance because of the above 2 issues

Wasn't he almost recalled and replaced as CA governor a few years ago?

A Governor can only issue an executive order to hold a special election to fill a House seat.

Na man they are going to double down. They were way too nice to their radicals over the years and now they have them locked into the very fabric of the party. They can’t move to the right in national elections because they have no conception what the center-right really thinks.
