Who is #2 then? There's no clearcut best team this year. Oregon might be the closest thing to it, but even they have had their struggles.
Fair point. I don't watch many non-SEC games, but I assume there's got to be a few teams better than what UGA showed against Florida and Kentucky. Doesn't pass the eye test. Maybe I'm using an old lens. šŸ§

I agree that Georgia doesn't pass the eye test. However they are 7-1 with a dominant win at Texas and the only loss at Alabama. Other 7-1 teams also have issues: Ohio State lost at Oregon and struggled to beat Nebraska; Texas lost to Georgia; Penn State lost to Ohio State; Tennessee lost at unranked Arkansas; Notre Dame lost to North Illinois.

Miami has played a garbage schedule, with their best win over a mediocre Florida team. Indiana has dominated everyone, but also another easy schedule.

It's just really difficult to rank teams so far this year. The playoff committee has a really difficult job.

When you stop and think about it, rankings are pretty stupid to start with. The top 25 is a list of opinions of how good some teams are. There is no objective criteria to determine what team is ranked where. The NFL doesn't have any sort of ridiculous rankings. The team records determine where they stand.

If college football really wants to be the NFL JV they need to follow the NFL model in determining who the champion is. Divide the country into four regions, Southeast, Northeast and half the Midwest, Northwest and the other half of the Midwest and Southwest. Put two 10 team "conferences" in each region and let each of those conferences determine a champion by playing a 9 game conference schedule. Send the 8 conference champions to a three round playoff to determine a national champion. There would be no need for any sort of rankings.

If Georgia doesn't have one abysmal quarter against Bama they are probably the undisputed #1 team. Their game against Florida was a clear example of how good teams handle poor outings. They looked absolutely mediocre for three quarters and still won by 14. The UF qb was hurt and who knows how that might have changed things but over the past several years Georgia has been well known for sort of "playing with their food" in games against teams they should beat easily. I don't think there is any top 10 team in the country that wants to play Georgia right now if Georgia has their full attention focused on that team.

All of that said; no team has really looked dominant this season. Everyone has had a game where they looked bad, lost in an upset or has a great record based on playing very weak competition.

It seems like there's a lot of parity this year in college football. Every team has flaws, and I think this expanded CFP could get really interesting. It seemingly opens the door for a real surprise team like, say, Boise State.
