A couple:
First, in the game immediately before the one you mentioned - PSU/MSU in the regular season finale
PSU was down big early
1) Right before the half, closing seconds, rather than play for the FG, dial up a post pattern to Freddie Scott for a TD. To close to within a score
After falling behind to MSU 37-17 in the 2nd half, things don't look good - but PSU keeps firing the ball all over the field (Collins to Brady/Engram/Scott). And comes back to win 38-37.
The day the PSU 1994 offense was born.
The second was on PSU's next trip to East Lansing, in 1995:
MSU up 20-17 in the closing minute and a half. PSU takes over deep in their own territory, and starts "matriculating the ball down the field" (Similar to Illinois 1994)
Final seconds, PSU at the 5 yard line. No timeouts. If they run a play in bounds, and don't get in, the clock runs out and they lose - so you throw to the end zone, and if no good, kick the field goal. Right?
Nope.
2) Inside flanker screen to Engram (which MSU has defended well) - but Engram finds a way to get to the end zone and win the game.
Sometimes you just have to give your best player a chance.
