I’m partial to Jimmy Page, but I like jazz too. Pat Martino was a GREAT guitarist. Do you listen to Joe Pass?
Joe pass was the same. They make something very hard look effortless
Jimmy was my first guitar hero when I learned to play at 15. I studied everything he did and bought every transcription I could find (even had a violin bow).
People throw around the term "virtuoso" too casually, but not with Joe Pass. Top 5 of guitarists that I've listened to.

What is going on with his frets? Its hurting my brain.
The scale length of a bass is around 34", while a guitar is around 25", and therefore the frets are spaced wider on a bass. Since his guitar has both bass strings and guitar, angling the frets is an attempt to find a balance between the different spacings on each instrument.

I figured it was just to allow normally impossible chords to be played. I know there's maths involved, I don't know how you could keep straight what notes you're playing.

Ok, do you know what that red button is on Buckethead's guitar? Mute or automatic strumming?

The coolest guitar tech I've seen live was Page's Transperformance tuning system being used to downtune while he played chords during the Whole Lotta Love freakout section.

I have to tip my hat to your namesake, Grant Green. Jean De Fleur is a great song.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's a kill switch to mute sounds while he's playing. Maybe to give a strummy kind of sound?

Saw this cat open for twin peaks with moms and 2 at chameleon Lancaster. twin peaks is a Chicago band and 2 loves them. Ron Gallo opened and I had no clue who he was. he opened with the first minute of this attached video but played/riffed/shredded it for 5 minutes. Everyon3 in th3 place was blown away. I don’t remember a single moment of twin peaks. Ron Gallo is a true axe man

I just rewatched this and forgot how filthy Marcus King's solo is. And he has to play this before John Scofield! (And Eric Krasno, who is no slouch). w @s1uggo72 will enjoy

I have to give John Mayer credit here....he really did a great job on SRV's HOF nomination tribute the other guys were good also, but I liked Mayer's short work here...

OK, so admittedly not the best ever but I always liked this one

This was one of the ones I was considering posting.

Since that one's already covered, I'll go with a guy that never gets considered among the greats, probably because of the one-hit wonder nature of the band and that it's more pop than rock. Nonetheless, this is an amazing solo. Unfortunately, much of it was edited out for the single -- here it is in its full glory. Solo begins at the 2:40 mark, and the guitarists name is Burton Averre.

Pardon my impudence, but I have a quarter in my pocket and a question for the board.

What do you think is the best guitar solo of all time?

It's hard to believe this question hasn't been asked already, but I don't remember. Below is my pick. I've heard dozens and dozens of versions of this solo, lucky for us the best one was captured to multi-track tape and 35MM film.

My issue with TSRTS is the crazy film editing they did in the England studio the following year. It was very frustrating seeing JPJ wearing different outfits during the same tunes and Jimmy's hair was at different lengths. I love the soundtrack, but Earl's Court blows away MSG for authenticity.

Not necessarily in the great solo category, but I thought this was the best place to share. I've heard about King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard for a while and finally had a chance to deep dive this past weekend. The guitar work is very innovative and some of the most interesting sounds I've heard for a long time. The era of interest (they have changed sounds over the years) is heavily influenced by Indian/middle eastern music. Although not prominent in the song posted below, they have experimented heavily with microtonal music. For the musicians out there, this means that their instruments actually have notes between, say A and A# (1/4 tones). Some of this will sound out of tune to people raised on western music - but it's very intentional.

It may turn a lot of people off, but for guitar heads, it is worth a listen. If you want to really hear the microtonal sound, check out KGLW>Automation

King Gizzard my new band these days. I have no idea what the hell they're doing. Yes, I understand the concept of microtonal stuff, but you may as well be playing a banjo. They rock out hard AF though.

Of course they won't play in FL, lots of bands won't anymore. Oh well!!!!

The guitar solo at the end made me cry last night. Listening in surround is like hearing it for the first time. The GF thought this was a live version.

If you dig Animals, you have to check this out.

This is a great version no doubt, but it is fatally flawed; Jimmy breaks a string during the solo. Listen at 8:45 for him transposing on the fly to a lower string/ octave. A different type or brilliance on display.
