It was a good window into one approach to building a championship caliber program, the mentality as well as recruiting. But, there was one personal scenario that had me shaking my head. If you blink, you might miss it. This one centered on RB, Chris Rainey.
They focused on him in a brief segment and talked about how he was born in prison, and both his mother and father spent a significant part of their adult lives in prison. One day, he said he was looking at a photo on the wall of Urban Meyer and his son celebrating the son's birthday. He realized that he had never celebrated his birthday nor had anyone to celebrate a birthday with himself. When he shared this thought with Coach Meyer, Urban decided to bring him to his house every Wednesday night. It was there that Urban's wife, Shelley, would cook spaghetti for Chris Rainey. Wednesday night became the tradition of Chris Rainey night with spaghetti dinner.
Now, if I am not mistaken, around the same time, Jerri Spurrier use to make chocolate chip cookies for our Gamecocks and distributed to them on Thursday evenings. But, the NCAA called this an unfair benefit and tagged Carolina with a violation, so she stopped giving cookies to players. We all know the NCAA is hypocritical in their actions against member institutions, but I just found it interesting to have this one case documented on video with no action while we know what happened in our case.
