Has anyone here seen Swamp Kings on Netflix? This is the documentary about the Urban Meyer years at Florida.

It was a good window into one approach to building a championship caliber program, the mentality as well as recruiting. But, there was one personal scenario that had me shaking my head. If you blink, you might miss it. This one centered on RB, Chris Rainey.

They focused on him in a brief segment and talked about how he was born in prison, and both his mother and father spent a significant part of their adult lives in prison. One day, he said he was looking at a photo on the wall of Urban Meyer and his son celebrating the son's birthday. He realized that he had never celebrated his birthday nor had anyone to celebrate a birthday with himself. When he shared this thought with Coach Meyer, Urban decided to bring him to his house every Wednesday night. It was there that Urban's wife, Shelley, would cook spaghetti for Chris Rainey. Wednesday night became the tradition of Chris Rainey night with spaghetti dinner.

Now, if I am not mistaken, around the same time, Jerri Spurrier use to make chocolate chip cookies for our Gamecocks and distributed to them on Thursday evenings. But, the NCAA called this an unfair benefit and tagged Carolina with a violation, so she stopped giving cookies to players. We all know the NCAA is hypocritical in their actions against member institutions, but I just found it interesting to have this one case documented on video with no action while we know what happened in our case.

I have started watching it, not done.

I liked the part where we beat them in 2005 in Columbia, and the discussion on the impact of that loss to Meyer.

We have a well earned reputation through the years, of being a team that losing to gets the coach fired, particularly back then, but that was probably to early in his tenure, but he certainly was concerned LOL.

“After that loss at South Carolina, I walk into this restaurant in Gainesville, Florida and they boo me … they boo me,” Meyer said in the documentary. “People started to question me as a leader and to say that I lost my confidence … I certainly lost my confidence. I’ve never had that much doubt. I thought there’s a decent chance this one’s over.”

Could have much more interesting with a focus on all the chaos and lack of general control he had over the locker room. But I get it, there's no way Tebow or Meyer would have agreed to be a part of that.

The comment about being booed in the restaurant is exactly why I have always said that I prefer to NOT be an Alabama or Ohio State or whoever. What a dickish POS action by dickish POS fans that feel its their entitlement to lord over everyone else at all times. Actually a good many of our fanbase is the same way.

The story Siler told about his Meyer calling his parents into a meeting to talk about his drinking was hilarious. Parents showed up drunk in the middle of the day. His mom says "Meyer, he's here to win a national championship. Are you here to win a national championship? Let me know if you ain't". Parents left, Meyer goes to hug Siler and says "keep doing what you're doing...you're ok.". haha

Did they mention the alleged murderer he had on the squad. Folks we’re pretty sure he walked up to a car in Gainesville and shot two people. He then got back in the car of two team mates and they drove off. Meyer had to know this psycho was out of control.

I watched it up to the part where SC beat them- then Tebow committed, then I got bored watching UF football history. Not my team.
I just hope we (SC) start beating them on the regular.

My brain was thinking your last paragraph before I finished your second.

Got a better chance now than when Meyer was down there. Like him, don't like him, but he was the real deal.

That sounds thematically similar to an ESPN documentary I saw of when Meyer took over the OSU program.

I guess drinking for him was like Larry playing "Pop goes the weasel" for Curly's boxing matches.
