Honestly, I’m just not excited.

I don’t know if it’s because I’m turning 50, or just that my hopes get dashed every year, or because of NIL greed, but I am soooo effing BLAH this season. I just don’t care. Yay, we get to see the same damn teams get into the playoffs. Yay, we get to hear the same talking points spewed from ex athletes, ex coaches, and over the hill talent. Yay, I get to move my schedule around football, neglect my wife and kids for 2.5 hours, only to be disappointed, unfulfilled, and distracted. 20 years ago I would plan my day around meaningless first Saturday games, make special meals for SC games, buy the pre season mags, and spend ALL DAY watching games. Now I want to flush the entire experience. What’s wrong with me? ☹️

I’m excited about sellers. If he doesn’t pan out then I’ll be blah. If we lose the Kentucky game, I will pretty much check out on the season.

I'm always excited for Carolina football in August. Depending how the season goes that excitement level will likely drop, but I'm pumped right now.
Dang dude, wish I was with you on this. Out of curiosity…are you under 40?

I have to agree. I'm just kinda blah about the season. Times gone by I was counting the days. Now it almost took me by shock that the season is here already. Part of it is life and having other priorities. Partly it's at least somewhat because of the current landscape. Knowing we don't have the resources like an Alabama, A&M, Texas and on and on and on. That essentially we are running a race with an anchor tied around our leg. It's also the portal and not knowing who our players are. It's also knowing a lot of our players really don't have any real loyalty or love of the Gamecocks they are just hired guns here for a check. So, bluntly there's just no connection there. We haven't had a really good year since 2013. Since then it's been a lot of disappointment with a few high spots and a lot of low. Also the bad year we had last year with an NFL QB and an 1st round NFL receiver, now what we got? I'm expecting the offense to struggle and don't think we have enough to keep up with any team that can score. Our defense will be good but not good enough or deep enough to shut someone down the entire game and I think that's what we are going to need. I'll watch and root but I'm not going to despair if we lose.

I'm 65 and hear all you guys are saying with all the changes, but I can't remember being this excited, I guess because we have enough returning experience to provide some depth and hopefully they're healthy enough and have gotten better, at least that's what I'm hearing. There are a lot of new faces as well. I'm just excited to see if they can deliver and that's all over the field, so yeah I think the schedule is daunting and we might not be much better record wise, but I'm Interested to see if we've gotten better across the board, along with the transfers and new staff, I think we can be very competitive!

I think that's where the 'fan' part comes in. Eternal optimism.

You are young. But the older one gets, the less excited about and less important these games become. Young family members are gung ho about it. I go along because I know it's so important to them. I don't want to be a wet blanket. I do care how we do. But losses don't bother me anymore. I remember as a young guy when we lost to Clemson in 1977. I was so heartbroken. I remember a Carolina fan at work (not me) said to a Clemson fan: "Yeah well the sun still came up Sunday morning". The Clemson fan responded, "Yes and its color was orange". When I heard that I didn't like it. But today in a similar game, if a Clemson fan said that, I'd laugh.

The changes in college football (NIL and possible lifting of scholarship caps) is a huge disadvantage to us. But I don't tell that to young family members. No sense in popping their balloon. It will be popped soon enough. Let them keep their hope. After having the run we had from 2010-2013, then mediocrity since 2014, that takes a lot out of you.

So, it's natural to feel like you do. Just try to put up a good front for your children and grandchildren. If a grandchild asks you what game do you look most forward to, have an answer ready.

Agree with the OP. I'm 63 and beaten down as a result of being a lifelong Gamecocks fan. Regardless of the preseason hype and ranking, I'll get excited after we are about 6-0. If you have low expectations, you won't be disappointed.

I remember when the younger fans would get upset because the atmosphere at WB was like a social club and everyone was happy if it was just a good game.
Now those younger fans are getting older and aren't excited about Gamecock football the way they used to be, due to the letdowns, and we can't go back to the way it used to be.
No one likes to lose, but I did enjoy it much more back then and I no longer have the desire for season tickets or the GC Club........wish I did but I dont.

I’m excited but guarded. Like I said earlier, I’m entering my 61st season. The 1984 Navy game scarred me for life.
I'm afraid my feelings reflect the OP. Not excited and won't be too down in the dumps with each loss. As a matter of fact, I have reached the point where I expect losses whereas years ago I always expected to win.
I echo the Navy game. No real reason for that loss. GCs were not ready to play. That game alone changed the entire history of GC FB.
It didn't stop there. Spurrier lost a Tenn game which would have meant a chance for the SEC championship. Tenn won on an unbelievable catch by a WR.
We GCs are the best fans in the nation but even we have a breaking point. If something drastic isn't done to change the tone of GC FB, WB may start to look like an ACC stadium.

I hear what everyone is saying and I sure can’t fault you for it. At 66 I’m on the show me side. But I’m still excited to see what the young guys can do, can they perform up to expectations? (Sellers, Stuart, Bennett, Harbor and others). If so it could get exciting, especially with a couple of wins no one is giving us a chance to pull off. Beat Ole Miss, kiffin and Juice ranks top on my wish list.

One of the best FB coaches USC ever hired but the BOT for some reason listened to Holderman and fired Jim. A big big mistake. Set USC FB back and ruined Carlen's career.
It was as big of a mistake as getting out of the ACC looked at the time.
Carlen being fired was bad enough for our football program (the one constant about our football program; we shoot ourselves in the foot). But it ruined a good coaches career. No, he was not perfect. We all have our flaws. But overall, he was a good coach and man. I'm glad he lived long enough to see Holderman get his comeuppance.

Lol, yep I'm 30.
We’re about the same age. This will be my 31st full football season.

I just looked at some records for the past 30 seasons 1994-2023. Here’s a summary of what we’ve lived through

Overall record 191-174-1
Conference record 104-137-1
Bowl record 10-7
Rivalry record 10-19

18 winning seasons
Conference record breakdown 8 winning seasons (5-3 or better), 15 losing seasons, 6 even seasons (4-4 conference record)

It might not be the records we’d like to see, but I sure ain’t going anywhere. Thankful for this team and all lifelong friends in garnet and black that ride with South Carolina!

Always excited for football. Between work, kids, and other responsibilities, I need some time for myself. Anyone that knows me understands that Saturdays from September-November are mine.

I'm what you call "optimistically pessimistic." If you don't expect much, it's hard to be let down. But it's easy to be pleasantly surprised.

We are blessed to be able to watch football, good, bad, or ugly. If good things happen, all the better. Life is short. Enjoy it!
Sweet chocolate moses, thank you. The broken records on here are pathetic. Trying to find something worthy of participating in a thread is like trying to find a ray of sunshine in a mud bog.

Nothing wrong with how you are feeling right now. It's just the change in one's outlook as we get older whereby football or sports in general is not as important as it once was. I know because I am over 50 as well and share the same feelings as yours towards football. Nowadays, I still watch college football but in a recreational manner. In addition, I have delved into other new hobbies and activities too. There is nothing wrong with me and there is nothing with you either. Trust me and... Go Gamecocks!!!

I'll be 39 next month, you mostly just described me though. Except I spend more time with my wife and my kid on my Saturdays in the fall(when I'm off work) if the Gamecocks do something special I can always go back and check it out later, the ephinany finally hit for me about 7-8 years ago.
