how important is it for JF to get a DC in place quickly?

we have a bowl game coming with a very challenging offensive scheme for us, and some recruits in the 2022 class mentioning they want to see the DC before they now commit. we have the following holes:

  • DC who was also LB coach - GONE
  • Possible Safety coach who was co-DC - possibly gone to HC
  • Possible CB coach looking
  • Possible loss of DL coach to VaTech
  • We could lose the entire meat of the Def staff over a couple weeks and have to get to a bowl game and hold DEF recruits.
Do you have to move fast? where do you go as ND, LSU, USC, Miami and others in the market for DCs all trolling college ranks?

Go to NFL - maybe Sean Spencer returns as DC and handle DL if we lose John Scott
Get LB coach from NFL - how about Sean Lee or Poz - they my be new at coaching but for a position coach would take either guy - others?

Whatever we do, we need to have some better stability in the staff. We may have one of the highest coach turnovers in the BIG. When I see LJ's name repeated as being an OSU god and Josh Gattis repeat continuous at UM games - why have they not hit HC jobs?

IMHO, not important at all. The important thing is to hire the right guys in plenty of time for spring practice. Just get ready for 2022. If we lose the bowl it won't be for lack of a game plan or preparation. These guys have played 12 games, they know the system and assignments. Worst case we will have Scott, Lorig and Smith and the GAs will have a larger role.

You build for the long term and don’t panic. Getting the right person is more important than the quick hire.
normally I would agree we should be hiring for the long term, but given the rate we seem to turnover coaches, does the long term even mean anything?

Abdul Carter likely being recruited by Va Tech and wanting to hear who the PSU DC is going to be. That was on the podcast. Zane and Winston may also be wait and see.

So Pry coached him at LB at Vandy in 2011. Just a guess but he probably won't be calling the defensive plays at VT.

I find it hard to believe any other defensive PSU coaches make the move to VT all things considered. They would be lateral moves. But I'm sure the sky is still falling according to the OP.

Trying to be the Head Coach and the de facto Defensive Coordinator is difficult to do. Many coaches have failed by trying to wear too many hats.

Is it possible that they have someone teed up who prefers to finish his season with his current team?

I honestly hate getting NFL guys to return to college, cause IMO there is a high chance they are going back to the NFL.

I'm assuming you're talking about Spencer? With college coaches getting $100 million 10 year contracts, why would any OC or DC go back to the NFL when the path is easier to cash in in college?

There is also a high chance any assistant coach we have will move on after his group puts up a good season. At this point, we need the best guy for next season at each open position. Nobody is staying with an opportunity to move, from the looks of it.

Maybe not extensive but you don’t get hired by Mississippi State, FSU, and VT without making a good impression

LJ is DL/AHC I believe. New times.... you hire $omeone before you fire the person in position. See Miami or us for OC last year.

If you are going after Spencer, why wait? If he is interested, and that is who JF wants, just do it.

Some of the takes in here are ridiculous and uninformed.

Abdul Carter is sticking with the good guys.
Scott is sticking with the good guys as DL coach.
Elijah Robinson is being courted, but may also be up for the Temple job.
Terry Smith is also being vetted for the Temple job.
Rumors swirling that LJSR might be retiring from OSU this offseason - so not all is well in Columbus right now with their staff.

Lastly, what is it with this fanbase's obsession with former players joining the staff? with no coaching/recruiting experience? Just because of their name? And because you (a fan) liked them when they played here? Please stop with that nonsense.

Spencer is under contract and actively coaching in the NFL. I would think he'd want to coach out the rest of the season unless he gets terminated in the meantime.

I used to feel that way, but now the college guys are turning over every year, so what is the difference. Heck, the NFL guys might be more stable meaning you get two years out of them. Clearly you now need to be able to change major parts of the staff every year.

Bama seems to have a new OC every year, and it does not matter. Recruits there don't seem to care.
