Where's the driver of the truck? Thought reports mentioned no casualties.
He can certainly explain the time line of this accident.

No Casualties was the initial report, but that seems to have changed. The driver has been missing since the fire, and it may be that the human remains that have been found are his.

Feel sad for the family of the man the sources are saying it is.

My 2 cents on a repair. Everyone keeps saying raised highway but to me it just looks like an overpass for the exit ramp. I mean yeah its raised but not on a bridge, raised by earth. So for a quick fix, just fill in the overpass and forget about the exit for now. Fill it in, pack it down, put a new road on top of if it for now, highway construction crews put down temp roadways all the time(seen them on the turnpike, I80 etc). Just to get the road open again instead of waiting for new overpasses to be fabricated and shipped and installed. Then just replace each side when the pieces are ready, divert all traffic to one side(NB or SB) while the other side is being permanantly fixed. 🤷‍♂️ 🤷‍♂️ 🤷‍♂️

Blessings to all. We went through a similar event when I-35 bridge collapsed. Hope the death count remains at zero. Hopefully those in charge will incentivise an early completion. That greatly sped up the i-35 project.

In 1970, One of my first projects at Michael Baker, Jr. was to redesign many concrete/pile foundations supporting the concrete piers that supported the elevated Delaware Expressway thru the city.

Nice. My grandfather (1896-1973) was a civil engineer who worked all over Washington. National Cathedral, Taft Bridge, 14th Street bridge, on renovations. His one notable original construction is the Islamic Mosque on Massachusetts Avenue at Rock Creek Parkway. Norm wore a three-piece suit every day, always dressed for Mass, I’m smiling at the memory. He played on the last Catholic University football team to beat UMd, 1916. Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled program.

My grandfather & grandmother raised me thru my teens, I wish my GF lived as long as yours. He was born in 1900 - 1963, 10 yrs before yours. He was a dynamite blaster in the deep anthracite mines, I never did pick up the trade.

The southbound portion of the elevated highway did not collapse, but the initial belief is that the metal supports were compromised and as such can not handle daily traffic. As such, the southbound portion of I-95 at this location is also closed, while the engineers examine the supports.

To update: The evaluation has been completed, and they have concluded that the supports for the southbound lanes are compromised, and can not be fixed. So the southbound lanes over the exit have to be taken down, and that process is supposed to start this afternoon. That seemed to be how things were trending, but it does eliminate any possibility of a quick workaround, where the southbound lanes could have been used to take a couple of lanes of northbound traffic to keep I-95 open at the site of the fire.

The South bound lane will also be closed. Getting to an Eagles game will be nuts!

Not really. It will only impact those in southern Bucks County or those in the far Northeast. (Perhaps certain parts of NJ, but those folks will use I-295 or the NJ Turnpike.) Those folks will have to either use alternative routes, take one of the detours, or use public transportation. And unlike most of the other events held at the sports complex, there is a lot of tailgating before Birds games, so folks going to such are used to departing from home hours before the start of the game.

Thanks Jam,
WTF happened that a tanker hauling petroleum would explode instantly?
Driver fall asleep and crash the fuel trailer into the abutments?
Something's not right here. Liquid fuel doesn't explode like that pictured. Petroleum vapor will.

That's where I used to live in the early 1970s--when I-95 ended shortly before the Ben Franklin. So it will be like it was back then (mind you I started taking the subway from Fern Rock to avoid it).

“I saw a provocative movie on cable TV. It was called The Net, with that girl from the bus. I did a little reading and I realized, it wasn't that farfetched."

As much as I liked him as Frank Costanza, he was even better as Arthur Spooner.

Frank had certain skills. (Remember the wheelchair episode?) Arthur was hopeless, useless, oblivious to the point of totally lacking a sense of shame. (Remember the surprise birthday party?)

Frank invented Festivus. Arthur lost his daughter’s name in a poker game.

What she said about waiting for fill material to settle as you backfill is just wrong. The reason they're using this recycled glass aggregate, while it still may be faster to install for other reasons, is more about its weight being 85% lighter than normal fill materials. The concern being reported is that the weight of normal fill material may crush existing underground utilities.

Here's a link to the manufacturer of the glass fill material.

You can also fill the tri-axle trucks up much more than standard stone and still be under weight. Less trips trucking makes it much quicker. It's a win win.

Yes, it's also easier to spread and takes a lot less time to compact, and the backfill process won't be impacted by rainy weather. Lot's of pluses in this application, I wonder how much more it costs.
