I see the issue with some posters and the WBB program as two-fold. For some, their sports prism only revolves around men and what men can do athletically. They constantly compare the women's product to the men's product when they shouldn't be compared. Anyone with a drop of sense knows that the women can't compete with men athletically. With that said, that fact should not stop you from appreciating the skill that a woman can develop in a particular sport. If you can't appreciate the speed a Milaysia Fulwiley has with the ball on her hands, you don't know basketball and what it takes to be a good player. Same with Kitts hustle and effort around the basket against Maryland last Sunday. If you know the sport, you know that those are qualities that gets you wins in the Men's or Women's game. The second issue is the coach that is winning all of these games. Some of our fans having a personal issue with Dawn and they can't stand that is her that is winning all these games and getting all of this attention. So, they poo-poo like they don't care until we lose a game and then they seem to care a whole lot.
It's a funny dynamic to watch but it would be great when some of these detractors get on board and just appreciate the run that this program is on. This is not happening at every school you know. There are plenty of schools that have no sport to be proud whether it be on the men or women's side.
Any reasonable basketball fan can appreciate the women's talent and ability. Aja Wilson was and is an incredible basketball player. So is Clark at Iowa, or any number of the big name women's players. Just because you appreciate the talent and ability doesn't mean you have to enjoy the product on the floor. I love basketball, but I just can't enjoy the average WBB game. I will probably flip on the beatdown of CU tonight, and I'll watch them if they play for a championship. Outside of that, though, WBB doesn't move the needle for me.
To your point on the coach...I don't want to derail the thread and turn it political, but Coach Staley has made several stances/comments that many fans won't and don't agree with. It's understandable why a fan may not appreciate her political stances or comments. Actively wanting her to fail at your school because of a political disagreement is weird though.
I went to plenty of WBB games when I was in college, but it's just not a sport I have any interest in. I'm glad we have a great program, and it's cool to be nationally relevant in something. I just wish it were in a sport I cared about...football, MBB, or baseball.
