That's common damn sense right there to try and break it up. He just slid right into the bag and didn't even attempt to slide into the SS. Could have led to a bad throw, especially since the SS had to hurry because the ball was so weakly hit.

Brownlee slides on the left side of the bag and he gets in the way of the shortstop and easily has plenty of arm reach to be able to touch the bag and it not be interference.

the play is open to interpretation by the umpire and I guess he didn't feel like it was interference.

If it's blatant I would understand. But the SS was close enough to the bag where 4 inches to Brownlee's left breaks that play up while still sliding almost perfectly straightinto the bag. And again, it's a double play if he doesn't do it, so what the hell else happens if he is called for interference? Frazier out at 1st? That happened with the double play. I say risk that a little bit more, especially in critical situations like that one.
