I saw where Dawn decided to interject herself into Iowa's game the other night

Dawn took to twitter to criticize the officials in Iowa's game earlier this week. I guess she doesn't have enough to do coaching our team and has decided to become the one woman watchdog for all of college women's basketball.

I suspect this wasn't random but premeditated. She's laying some groundwork in case we play them again. In that event, this will come up in pregame interviews and she will reiterate concerns over officiating that might subliminally effect how the game is called. I'm not being facetious.

These must not have been officials of color as she previously lambasted those criticizing officials of color whose officiating was questioned after review of last year's tournament final four as if that was the only reason they were criticized.

Don't follow the women's game at all, but I know enough to know that Dawn is among the very best at what she does. Whatever she said, there was a calculated reason for it.

I think she sees herself as the queen of women's basketball and the arbiter of truth and justice in women's basketball. She is the female modern day version of John Thompson at Georgetown when Georgetown was at the top of men's basketball. John thought he was bigger than the game and he was the voice of all things basketball. I think Dawn sees herself as bigger than the sport.

Dawn is a great coach and Carolina is on top in women's basketball but as the old saying goes "this too shall pass".

Agree, Dawn is an outstanding coach, but it is the attempt to be ''bigger than the sport'' which is something she should save for when she runs for political office.

I guess I don't get it:

"Heckuva shot, but give the game ball to the ref for the shooting foul call."

Where is the problem?
She is the coach of a team that will likely face Iowa in the tournament and not involved in any way with either of the teams playing that game. She shouldn't be putting her two cents in no matter what happened. No one asked her about the game, she decided she was so important that her thoughts needed to be put out there.

It smacks of arrogance to me and I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Dawn has done a great job but she is full of herself.

Women's basketball doesn't matter to me, but I actually like it. I guess you can't be fined for criticizing the officiating from a game in which your team wasn't competing. Take advantage of it.

I'd love to see some football coaches follow suit.

You are probably right, and I don't see one thing wrong with that. Coach K acted like that. Saw very few people having a problem. Most big time coaches have huge egos. That comes with the territory

So, was Phil Jackson arrogant? He called out violations of players publicly all the time. He played the refs on the court and in the press room. Steve Kerr did it on Christmas Day. Crying about how the refs let superstars bait them into foul calls. People just need to let Dawn Staley coach her team. It's obvious that she knows what see is doing.

There are some coaches who become an icon and when they speak people in their profession listen as do many fans of the sport. IMO Dawn has earned the creeds to speak her mind. As an example, SOS had a lot of opinions about other teams and games didn't mind sharing them. Seems to me, Anon looks for anything he/she can find that is negative about USC and anything that paints USC and supporters in a bad light.

And I’m thinking maybe we have some racists on this board who don’t like a black woman in her position speaking out and not staying in her place.
I'm sure there are people on the edges and people at either quarter point.

This is what it is. No one had a problem when Spurrier spoke his mind on whatever topic he chose, nor do they a certain individual who formerly ran the country, but let a strong black woman speak her mind and it is shut up and stay in your place. Here is a suggestion, If you don't care for or understand her, keep her name and actions out of your mouth and do not follow her on twitter. Whoever is bringing your her movements or opinions normally has an agenda also.

I can't believe it! A basketball coach commented on a basketball game? What will she do next?

Was there anything particularly polemical about anything Spurrier ever had to say? I would say not. No wonder he never got any serious pushback because the topics he addressed weren't lightning-rod topics. The other person you cited got plenty of pushback, even to an almost maniacal degree from particular quarters, but that comes with the territory in which he lives, as I'm certain he is very well aware.

If a person ventures into turbulent waters, that person has to be ready to handle the currents. Moreover, even the most vehement objections to the presence of the currents are not going to change the realities they impose.

I think some of y’all need to quiet down. What she said on Twitter was right on point. I do not agree with everything she does but I’m sure we all have our own ways that some may not care for. She is a product of her own unique background and can speak out on anything she wants. She is a Christian, a great human being, community and industry leader(coaching). I like her. I like her for her accomplishments and she wins basketball games for my school. That makes me really like her a lot. And she doesn’t like getting hosed by poor officiating which we got on a silver platter in last years final four and which will surely happen in Baton Rouge.

I don't know why this is so difficult. She is a racist that is a good basketball coach and was a good player. There have been plenty of talented, disgusting racists in history.

Most on here IMO agree she is a great coach. Sometimes her speaking out is borderline Sharpton like. Met her few years ago at football game before she was "big time". Seemed ok then. Of course, I was with a HS coach who had a player on her team then, a starter. I wonder if I would have the same opinion now?

He did talk about "Taking down that damn flag". He got some blow-back, but that was before his 11-2 seasons.
Can you imagine if Dawn had said that at that time?

If you're going to tell it, it should be with accuracy as to what he said - and the catalyst - and include the fact that Tanner also weighed in, as seen here. Completeness would also include that his remarks were in response to a particular scenario that was embarrassing to our (his) program. https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2015/6/19/8814061/steve-spurrier-confederate-flag-quote

I love Dawn Staley but Steve Spurrier never once mentioned race and nobody ever mentions it to her or her 95% black team. She always brings it up for no apparent reason. To point this out is not racist but fact! No reason to beat the race card to death I have no problem with everything else that she does and is doing.
Lots of old angry white men in this thread

You think she’s a racists bc she might see the world a little differently than you? Pretty sure her partner is white.

Nobody said anything about her being racist!! Pay attention they just said that she brings up race often unprovoked and for no reason!! And the statement that I just typed isn’t racist but fact!! So quit adding your liberal slant!!
