I think Lebby is building a foundation for something great

What is this "foundation" we speak of anyway? Is it concrete? Pilings? It's a football program, not a building. I'm just curious what a foundation is, in modern day college football when you have the portal. Seems to me it's a means to give a coach an excuse. Croominator talked a lot about foundations.

It's basically culture and personnel. How many years does it take to instill your culture? I'm guessing 1 if you're improving, and 1+1 repeatedly for each year you're looking like shlt.

If we want to get real, the true foundation is fan support. And that transcends coaches and players. Coaches should have never been given 3 years minimum in the past to 'turn it around'. You should see the improvement immediately, even if it's not wins. Ask Dan Mullen and Curt Cignetti.

Yeah, and I’m far from giving up on Lebby, but one thing that the positive Pollyannas should recognize about recent “progress” is that we’re getting C+ effort and preparation from the teams we’re playing right now. They know that they can beat us hungover and sleepwalking, and if UGA prepared for our game like they did for Texas, we’d have lost 70-0

This team has a long, long way to go

He's a special teams coach. Always has been for 15 years, never promoted. He's never been a DC. He was hired to do something he has absolutely no idea how to do. 5 different teams in 5 years.

This is on Lebby. There was absolutely nothing about his resume that he should've been hired as DC. Lebby 17d up.

There are some really good G5 DCs that would love the opportunity.
And to cap it off, we doubled down and gave him a $4M, 4 year contract which is truly the worst part.

I’d love to hear one day how this all went down, but when Selmon promised X amount of dollars to Lebby for his staff, it should have come with the stipulation that he hire real coaches. As soon as he came back with Hutzler as his guy, Selmon should’ve cut the number in half and forced him to either take it or leave it

I dont buy the whole building something great thing. Its kind of hard to buy into that when we are in the middle of one of the worst seasons in history.

That said, he does look like he's got things going better than he did 3 weeks ago. however, that doesnt discount what he did 3 weeks ago.

He's still got a long way to go to even proof he was a decent hire. Lets let him build something average before we assume he can build anything that resembles great

Well another fire Hutzler discussion. We have 11 defensive commits right now..... and every State talking head and fan is screaming fire the DC.

I do know we don't have much talent on the defense. I don't know if another DC greatly improves their ability to stop anyone. I don't know even if a DC with better credentials would sign on to the revolving door at MSU.

Regardless we need to keep these commits we have for sure. We are about to lose one to Vandy.

If the Leach-haters have any consistency at all, they'll give Hutzler some slack because apparently this is all due to Leach's crootin' failures.

Well when you are very near the worst defense in all of FBS what do you expect people to say? We got almost nothing out of the portal last year on defense and a lot of that had to do with a no name DC. Get someone competent hired on that side of the ball that provides some hope to fans and recruits and the players will follow. Right now we are losing defensive commits due to how woeful we are playing on that side of the ball.

You can't keep a guy that doesn't know what he's doing. Learning on the job in the SEC = failure.

Hutzler ain't gonna get canned. Stop being ridiculous. Yes the d sucks. They have got to get some legitimate DT and DE that can create pressure. Not sure why they grabbed the few portal guys they did but anyone could have told you they were not good. The secondary can not cover receivers if we give the QB all day. Kpaka and KBJ are the only 2 portal guys that play. We desperately need Dink back. If they don't add quality on the DL this off season it might be time to change things but he will be given at least 2 years.

We should have hired Curt Cignetti. The day of taking a gamble on an unproven coordinator is long gone...there's a difference between coaching a team and running a program

There are some really good HS DCs that have to coach players playing on both sides thst could do better. But it is still the Jimmys and Joes that were poorly evaluated that hurt this team. Apparently we do not have the depth or the speed to play a 4-3-4. With our lack of pass rush, we probably need to play a 5-2-4

Agreed. More than ever before, we need a hardasss with a lot of college coaching experience, who don't GAF. That was Leach, and now Cignetti. King Jackie and Danny had that in them too, albeit Danny was a first-timer. He had the hardasss mentality.

I didn't hate Leach, I did hate his offense. Leach was notorious for not having a good defense. We don't have much talent at all on defense. Hutzler will be back next year, as he should. He gets a pass this year, as does Lebby.

Any competent, experienced DC (or potential DC) would have passed on our job last year. Everybody knew we had almost nothing returning on defense. Top that off with a first year head coach. Y'all toss this stuff out like we could have somehow just magically pulled in a name DC or near DC. This is what total rebuilds look like.

Sad that this year is a total rebuild from last years "rebuild"!
Also, Leach's 2022 defense was pretty solid. It's not like state outscored everyone 54-49 in that 9 win season. We had a record setting QB, decent WR's, one of our best ever RB, a solid Oline, a better than average Dline. The top 2 tacklers in the SEC in our LB Corp, and 1 of the top CB and Safety returning to the 2023 team that were recruited by a Leach and staff!

our administration put State in a self imposed 3-4 year probation because our HC died. How incredibly stupid!

That defense was good because of upperclassmen.

Culture is step one and we've got guys playing hard, knowing they're probably going to lose. Thats culture! We've got pieces on offense but nothing much on defense. Probably need staff changes there but if we hit on the portal big, maybe not wholesale. Got to have a crap ton over there.
A full year in the S&C program for a lot of guys is big too.
