Just explain to me the upside of being unhappy as a fan? With Oregon, Washington and USC coming in......you don't expect to see them near or at the top? With the advent of the 12 team playoff, two and perhaps even 3 loss teams will be considered (from the big ten and sec). PSU will do well to finish 9-3 or 8-4 next year. I'm sure it's gonna all be the fault of James Franklin!
You heard it hear first. We deserve better!
What's the upside of being unhappy in your job? Or in your relationship? A rational person would look to improve that situation or look for a better situation. The same calculus applies to fans as well. People have always seen fandom as some sort of absolute. If you're a graduate of the school, the math is different. But a majority of fans are not graduates of the schools they root for. So for those people, it becomes a cost/benefit analysis.
How much time and money am I willing to spend on a team that has no realistic chance of winning a national championship? Am I in it for titles or entertainment? How much entertainment do I get watching my chosen team lose every big game that they play?
Ultimately, unhappiness is expressed in behavior. Fans without concrete connections will stop attending or watching games. They'll stop buying merch.
This is also why James Franklin will never be fired. Not that he would cost to much to get rid of, but because Penn State's balance sheet shows him as a net positive to the athletic department and to the university as a whole. Penn State is clearly taking a pragmatic approach to their program.
