I was really impressed with Hunter Renfroe

at catcher today. He looked really good- and he has a rocket launcher for an arm. I was impressed with how he handled our pitchers and how he received the ball. We just need his bat to come around.

I think he will be our everyday catcher next year but if he can get control of his pitches he could be a lights out closer. Summer ball should help Hunter a lot.

Coming out of high school, Renfroe was regarded as a MLB-ready defensive prospect. His pop-to-pop time is as good as most MLB catchers. He also has great power at the plate, just needs more AB's to adjust to SEC pitching.

last summer a bunch of guys playing in a softball toruney at Crystal Springs went to Copiah Academy between gamesto hit and several softballs left that cracker box. Copiah & MRA have to bethe 2 smallest ball parks in Mississippi High Schools. So any power numbers from guys playing at either placeare skewed. And I can tell you that a 345 power alley at WestLauderdale enhanced Paxton Pace,Cody Freeman and Austin Davis'numbers as well.

he didn't play every game there. He has a tremendous amount of power, but that doesn't mean it will ever translate in the SEC. It's one thing to hit an 80 mph fastball a country mile, it's another to hit mid 80's sliders and low 90's fastballs with movement on a consistent basis.

physicality department and while I believe there is nothing wrong with small guys that know how to play baseball it is helpful to have a few that can go yard from time to time and we are lacking in this area.

when Renfroe would have gunned him down by at least two feet- and McCann runs pretty well for a catcher. It didn't count because we struck the batter out to end the inning. Still impressive.

I would take a guy like Jeffrey Rea any and every day. Or Caleb Reed for that matter.

But, a lot of pro prospects are bigger guys. The fact that we are getting bigger players tells me that we are getting more talent in general. I don't mind the occasional CT Bradford as long as he can play.

But as I said, I have been to that field and witnessed guys hitting soft balls out. I am not saying HRs at Copiah would be pop ups to the SS at Dudy Noble, but dang, softballs.....Softballs were flying out of there like planes at LaGuardia.

That is a short field. In MAIS games they position the outfielders on the fence to hold hitters to singles man.... a short field.

Those tree lines behind the left to center fence must make it run fairly straight from the 300 to 355, meaning that the power alley couldn't be much more than 335, Maybe even 330.

But I digress.

Men's Soft Ball Field dimensions are 300 all the way around.

Jonthan Holder and Brandon Woodruff are big guys. We definitely need to add a few guys with power to our lineup.

hitting it out of the yard. The last time I picked up a softball bat was probably six years ago and even back then they were trampolines. There is no telling what they are like now. Granted the baseball bats are the same (up until this year) way. You could tell by his limited number of hits this year (the ones I saw anyway) that the kid has a little extra pop in his bat.
