Transfer QBs off the top of my head that were the center of their team’s success in the past few years. Burrow, Ewers, Hurts (OU), and Fields. They all left bc they were down on the depth chart.
Fields left because he couldn't beat Fromm for the starting job and Fields' daddy got mad. Fields HS qb mentality, if the first receiver is covered, run, didn't work well in the SEC but in the Big Slow 10, Fields was athletic enough to be effective. Burrow wasn't good enough to win the starting job at Ohio State and he caught lightning in a bottle at LSU with Ensminger as OC and qb coach. He was surrounded by incredible talent at LSU on both sides of the ball. If he had transferred to, say Iowa, no one would have thought he was anything special. Ewers committed to Texas before flipping to Ohio State where he played in one game. Hurts was on 3 Bama teams, 2 as the starter and came in to lead Bama to the SECC win, hardly buried on the depth chart. Hurts graduated and transferred to OK.

There have been loads of transfer qbs who made no difference in their new team's fortunes but they were able to start because they were better than the qb the team had before.

Dude, if you want me to believe Justin Fields wouldn't have been a better option than Jake Fromm you lose me. Burrow never would have seen the field at OSU. He portalled and lead the best offense in the history of CFB. Ewers would have battled for the starting job this year at OSU. Who knows how it would have worked out, but nonetheless, he transferred to TX so he could play. Hurts lost his starting job to a freshman...and transferred so he could play. This whole discussion started bc a comment was made "if Rocket is so good why is he in the portal". As if to suggest good players don't transfer. Clearly that's not the case.

I agree some good players transfer, no doubt, but they usually aren't the best at their position on the team. As to Fields, he couldn't come close to beating out Fromm. When he did play, other than being able to make some plays with his legs he was pretty bad. He couldn't read a defense, still can't, and SEC defenses were too fast for him to rely on pulling the ball down and running every time his primary receiver was covered. At OSU he could revert to his HS days of being the best athlete on the field most of the time and running successfully when the pass wasn't immediately there. He looked pretty good against Clemson, an ACC team, but Bama totally destroyed him, an SEC defense. His career with the Bears has been an extension of his days at UGA, great athlete, weak qb.

It was a pretty open secret in Athens that Fields daddy was way too involved and had been since his middle school days.

hmmmm, any substantiation?

I can step in here and provide some information and context.

Mario's initial plan was to return to USC. There was going to be a NIL deal lined up for him at USC.

Along the way, he hired an agent.

Some advice was given that led Mario to believe that he wanted to seek a bigger deal. Before things could really be situated, he decided to enter the portal to test out that market. What he was seeking was not going to be found here anyways.

There were some conversations, but it just really expired.

As we know, USC was also very active in the portal and found three guys the staff likes.

I don't know if Anderson ultimately found the type of market he was looking for. I couldn't confirm that. I hope he did.

If a school's collective - remember, collectives are the ones largely generating the NIL dollars that schools need to recruit - had unlimited funds, none of this would be a problem in terms of having to make some strategic decisions.

USC currently has a NIL environment where it can attract some top-flight types of talents.

It does not have a NIL environment in which it can attract 20 of them a year. And you can't keep everyone on the roster - although USC kept a whole bunch of players who could have opted to enter the portal and also test the market.

Thanks Chris! Sounds like there been a concerted effort between the collectives and the AD to get organized and move the ball forward in terms of NIL. Feels like we’re making progress. Can you comment on that?

Best explanation I've read so far on SC's approach to NIL.

Garnet Trust was launched and been in operation since November of 2021. Truth be told, it took quite a while to get the proper support behind it.

Things are in a better place now, and GT of course has the official partnership with USC that's helped to drive things forward.

Yes, progress has been made. USC's still behind some others though, in terms of funding.
