I'll say this about Byrne...

...the guy says all the right things. I've gone from being about 80% sure that Raffo would be out next head coach last week to being about 80% sure that he won't, now.

Woe unto him if he hires Raffo anyway, after a "national search." But the guy is setting himself up for a great start if he ignores Polk and hires anybody but Raffo. For the first time in a long damn time, Mississippi State fans will be proud and excited about their AD. Well, everybody except KB21.

I really think he's going to be very very good. Good enough that we'll need to worry about him leaving for a bigger job in a few years.

....he hires Raffo after this so-called national search that's going to take place, then he'll lose my confidence. It's simple to me because I whole-heartedly believe that, if we really try, we'll be able to hire a proven head coach without much of a problem. Ending up with Raffo tells me that the national search was a facade.

I've meet Greg a couple of times and the one thing that impresses me, besides his uncanny ability to remember peoples name, is his work ethic. There isn't a guy that is going to out work him and he is hungry to prove that he can do the job. Now, he might make some decisions that we the fan base don't like but its not because he hasn't done his work. After LT gets out of his way we will see some change in how **** is done in the AD's office. Which is a good thing.

Well, think about this- If you're Byrne, you want to do something that is going to make an impression on the alumni and you want to do something that is going to be something positive that you can point to in the form of hiring coaches- especially since that was one of the major beefs with LT.

He's not going to fire Croom right now.

He's not going to fire Stansbury right now.

Fanning? Not that great of a target since no one cares about women's basketball, and he would have to hire Van Chancellor, which would be impressive.

Baseball is the logical choice. This is the sport that for many years was the centerpiece of the MSU AD. It is the only sport where we have a consistent history of success. A lot of people were unhappy with Polk even before he resigned. Now that he has chosen to retire on his own, Byrne can either promote his unpopular assistant, or he can actually go out and get a high profile baseball coach to get the alumni excited and get their money rolling in and get support for himself.

So, while Polk has his agenda, make no mistake that Byrne has his as well. Thank goodness Byrne's is probably what's best for us right now.
