Why would they cut football vs the other sports? If it’s not making money I doubt other things are.

Is it more of a competitive thing than a money thing? Thought I saw someone mention they were good at soccer…

Football has about 65 scholarships at the D2 level and more expensive travel costs. Your smaller sports can get 2 games in on a travel weekend so it cuts down on travel costs.

Still revenue minus expense, unless I’m missing something.

Football probably loses more money than the rest of the sports combined. But I wonder if they’ll lose students over this. Maybe with their base of students they draw from not as much as a secular school would.

Its not going to be 0, but the number of unaffected students that leave over this is going to be low. You'll have some football players leave, some cheerleaders, dancers and band members will leave, but the average non-athlete isn't going to lose sleep over this.

Saw another place where they averaged about 500 at home games.

Mississippi College is D2. Same revenue model as D1 just less required scholarships.

D3 is a different revenue model. Think of it as travel ball for college sports. 50 man baseball rosters and 130 on football teams. All paying tuition. No athletic aid.

Sorry, meant D2. What your link was referencing.

So what about this rev share shlt? They have to do that in D2? Guess you can’t share 0 but do they have to come up with something at the expense of other stuff? If so, no wonder they cut football, and I’d expect many others to do the same.

My dad taught at MC (his alma mater) for several years after retiring from Hinds, and one day I went to have lunch with him there, and we wound up eating with the college president (this was probably 15 years ago at least). They were still D3 at the time and we talked about the complexities of changing divisions. They had done a study about NCAA classification options for them and the one thing the president said that stuck with me was that for the costs associated with scholarships at the D2 level, they'd actually financially be better off going to FCS because it's not that many more scholarships than D2, and you can get big buy checks from FBS teams to help with the costs.

Edited to add: This was a former president, not the current one.

Yep. They should have played FCS. Play Louisiana Tech and South Alabama every year and you make your budget. That’s why your West Georgia, North Alabama and West Floridas are moving up. Only way to survive.

Presbyterian College in South Carolina is FCS and they don’t have 1000 students.

the Dallas Baptist model is interesting. Go D1 on one sport and D3 in everything else.

So why even have D2?

If they were looking to grow enrollment they should have changed their name to Mississippi Plumbing College to capitalize on all those kids y'all are sending off into the world of skilled labor instead of higher education.

The feds bloated existing and helped create many state and regional institutions of higher learning in the 40s-70s. It was their effort to redistribute resources and provide education opportunities for the local yokels to get better jobs.

Thankfully, tuition is finally turning into the majority revenue source for our institutions of higher learning. As it should be. Gotta pay to play. We need to start designating a significant percentage of tuition cost to our NIL.

GO DAWGS!

I heard MC's first choice for new names was "MS Brightwell University" followed by "Wynbridge State University of MS" but somebody had already claimed those, at least temporarily.......

Every small college and JC should get rid of sports that don't produce enough revenue to support the sport. MS, the poorest state and one of the least populated, has 13 JC football programs, not even Texas or California try to do that. It's insanity.
The problem is you cant can you? If football is making money and womens basketball isn't, you have to keep womens basketball and add in soccer and gymnastics etc to comply with title IX. Isn't that correct?

Insane system where we mandate losing money in the name of equality.

Where they "forced" to drop down due to the football scandal in the late 80s? MC certainly has a colorful history, i have several buddies who went there, they all said the same president who preached at chapel was getting hookers for boosters.

Dropping football and changing the name won’t prevent all the weird things that have and does go on there. Amen?

Anyone else remember the exorcism there, the time the two girls beat the holy crap out of this one girl in the name of Jesus?
👇🏻🙌🏻

There are nuts and psychos everywhere.

Whether you believe in God/Jesus or not, following the teachings of the bible makes the world a better place.

Birmingham Southern had a president screw up their investment portfolio and it took a beating 2007/2008 and never recovered. My guess is that simply accelerated the downfall, but who knows. I think we are heading for some lean times for colleges and universities. I wonder how many companies were built just on supporting higher ed? Banner, Workday and Canvas are a few SW packages that I know have substantial market share in higher ed. If universities take a dive, supporting business will as well.
Every investment portfolio on the planet took a beating in 2008 other than Steve Eisman’s and Michael Burry’s.
