What?Don’t underestimate the potential for hearing loss to become socially debilitating. (I have 60 years experience. I cope.)
Not with people who know me. If I’m in a small group with some cousins, for example, it works out fine. I’ve worked hard in speech therapy, my deaf voice is serviceable. (I actually taught as a TA at Tennessee, spoke for myself.) I pick my spots. For example, I always try to get a little 1-1 with my cousins, it works best that way. If it’s too loud, I’ll have issues. (First thing I do once I’ve arrived in an unfamiliar venue is ask how loud I need to talk to be understood.) I suck at small talk, sure, but so do a hell of a lot of other people. My cousins bring out the best in me.What?
You ever just give up and nod/smile?
But there are some people I just cannot lipread. One of my brothers-in-law, that sucks. But I do my best. Not with people who know me. But, other than family and my wife’s college friends, when I go out I’ll be with people who ASL. I cope.
