Interesting intel overheard today about baseball recruit Jett Williams…

My son and I came to the State Farm Showdown at Globe Life in Arlington…. Sitting here waiting for the Oklahoma/Zona game, we overheard some teammates of Jett Williams, our best 2022 baseball recruit from DFW.

One dude is apparently tight with him. Says if he gets drafted anywhere (undoubtedly will), he’s gone. They said TN offered him a private jet to use whenever he wants it, plus $50K. But, ultimately he wanted to be committed to a top tier program like State because it looks better to scouts and teams.

Dudes a 10 on Perfect Game, so the odds of him making it to college are slim. They were saying he hates school in general.

Just thought it was interesting. I wasn’t in the backseat of a taxi with a stripper (or whatever that story was from the porn guy), but wanted to pass it along.

I'm sure we could scare up a crop duster and Pony coupons.

Seriously... have we put a baseball NIL together yet?

Baseball America still has him at #45 on the high school draft prospect, for whatever that is worth. Dakota Jordan is at #35.

I'm having trouble believing Tennesse offered $50,000 plus free use of a private jet to a baseball player.

There was another thing I didn’t hear all of…

I'm having trouble believing Tennesse offered $50,000 plus free use of a private jet to a baseball player.

Some kid couldn’t believe he didn’t commit to Arkansas. And then the other kid said it was because of the coach and something specifically he’d do, but I didn’t catch the whole sentence.

These were high school kids, so take it FWIW…. I think with NIL, kids can be offered anything the schools can give.

The school can’t legally give anything. Why don’t people understand this?

Businesses can. The school can’t.

There’s no difference. The businesses are owned by boosters & they’re not paying if you don’t go to the right school.

I would bet that the average recruit does not care where the money is coming from as long as it comes.

There is a big difference in a business paying you bc the school wants them to and the school letting you fly around on their school paid for jet.

One is getting around the rules legally.
One is directly breaking the rules.

You are missing the point.
The school can’t directly give something like access to a their university paid for or owned jet.
So I’m calling BS on what the player was saying.

So if part of what he was saying wasn’t true, I’m not really worried abt any of it. Could be true could be not true. Who knows. At this point In his recruiting process, I don’t really care.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that we signed this kid for the purpose of perception, which I have no problem with. The little research that I did after he committed says he is going pro no matter what. The only scenario that I see him coming to school is if he is drafted in something like the 10th round and he thinks he can move up into the first 2 rounds by coming to school. Even then, I’d be surprised if he came to school.

Obviously the statement isn’t quite correct. A baseball player isn’t getting access to a jet to fly to Europe. Is there a UT baseball fan in the DFW area that has offered to fly his family back and forth to watch games? That’s possible.

You're splitting hairs over a technicality. Paying players is legal now. Of course the school isn't writing the check. But it's a pretty safe bet the schools that don't have their heads up their rear ends are setting up networks to write those checks for them.

"Private jet" doesn't necessarily mean university jet. Could be a boosters "business " jet.

No im not. I understand your point.

I’m saying that if a student is talking abt a university jet for players he probably doesn’t know what he is talking about.

It’s that simple.

Yes that’s certainly possible. I was reading it as the university jet which would never happen.

My mistake.

Ekie never said the jet was university owned. Of course it’s not. But it really doesn’t matter that a booster owns the plane.

Yes I acknowledged that below.

But yes it does matter if a booster own the plane or not.

A booster can now legally offer that to a student athlete. A university can’t offer a university jet. They can in a round about way offer a booster jet but the distinction is important.

It seems a lot of people think the university can just go all in on their own. They can’t. Other universities aren’t doing this either. Are they helping facilitate it? Probably but the university isn’t just heading it up “officially”.

Nobody thinks the schools are paying the NIL money directly. But thanks for clearing that up for us anyway.

You’re the same pearl-clutching rando that called me an anonymous message board turd after telling me to go back to my moms basement and now have called me a douche. Ya know, like an anonymous message board turd would do.

I’m not gonna keep getting into it with mouth breathing psychotic trolls like you and porn guy, but you can both absolutely go 17 each other.

Wear it dude. The shoe fits.

Not really. Not sure if it's anything to get offended about, but not everything that's "sexual" is porn. If you told people there is a lot of porn in pg-13 movies, I think they would rightfully pretty confused as to what you are talking about.

So one of the alums was going to let the kid use their jet. Guys, this is the game. Either play it, or watch our team get smoked by LBSU in the opening series after a national championship is not likely to happen again.

a private Jet is somewhere around $2500 - $3000 an hour while it's in the air.... Yep - that's VERY hard to believe, the guy might have embellished somewhat on that one

Very true…

I was just reiterating what I heard from a high school kid who was most likely leaving out a lot of context. I wrestled with asking the kid, but thought better of it. Still, their whole group kept talking about college baseball and the pros and cons of teams. It was fascinating….

Surely the jet belongs to a UT booster flying the kid and his family, but those words were never uttered.

This topic has been a mix of a game of “telephone” and seeing somebody pass out at 31 Flavors last night!
